It breathes fire! What more is there to say? It's really cool. Stick around for a few minutes even after you see it breathe fire the first time. It's so funny to see it happen when people don't know what's coming. The reactions are hilarious.

Apparently it breathes fire every 10 minutes, but on our visit there was no fire, which is a shame as it was the whole point of coming!

In winter the Dragons Den cave is closed, so you need to come out of your way a bit specifically to come here.

Although I didn't see it, apparently the flames were back a couple of days after my visit.

Descending from the Wawel hill overlooking the Vistula river in the heart of Krakow, on the riverfront is the statue of the Dragon that, according to legend, even the strongest warriors could not beat. Finally, it was a shoemaker who succeeded in the feat. It should have spit fire from its jaws but unfortunately for a fault this did not happen...

Grew up as a kid obsessed with the legend of the Wawel dragon. A visit to here is a must if you want to understand the story of Krakow (thats why there are lots of souvenirs - dragon teddy's, key rings, t-shirts etc.) The monument breathes fire which impresses the kids. You can buy a ticket to explore the cave where the legend says the dragon lived. I know the legend before I came but if you don't you could be lost as there is very limited info at the site of the story.

Statue representing the Dragon with free access! I do not recommend the dragon cave (too many steps, for a fee and also dangerous) which has access from the Tower located in front of the Castle. The Dragon breathes fire every few minutes! Nice experience if you are passing through. Well done!

Facing the River Vistula with the stunning Wawel Castle as a backdrop is the wonderful fire breathing dragon of Krakow which is just so cool .
Monument to the Wawel Dragon is a great fire breathing dragon ,it pays homage to the legend of the dragon that terrorised the people of King Krakus's city that could only be placated with the offering of cattle or Virgin's ( good luck with the last one, think it would starve itself to death nowadays ) .
Its a wonderful monument, kids will love it ,it breaths fire I think every 15 minutes or so and is most definitely well worth checking out if you're in the area near Wawel Castle/ Cathedral.

Great little statue that breathes fire. However, people are really disrepectful there.
Even when the fire starts, people keep putting children on the statue as if it were a playground...
It's not possible to take a decent picture without having some kids on it, and if they get hurt, they'll only have their irresponsible parents to blame.

Every few minutes the dragon spews fire. On its own it’s a nice sculpture to look at. The fire breathing bit just adds a little extra. I pity any pigeon sitting in its mouth at the wrong moment….

The Statue of Smok is located on the outskirts of the castle and accessible on the path that goes around the castle. It is free to see and is not required to visit the cave in order to get up close.

The statue itself is about 3 metres tall and occasionally breathes fire, adding to the magic of the legend that is Smok. It is not a periodic event when it breathes fire, but based on the natural gases under the castle so sometimes can be every couple of minutes, sometimes longer. None the less be sure to have the camera ready!

Just under Wawel Royal Castle by the river we came across this statue. We'd already read the story of Smok the Dragon then was surprised by the flames that come about every 5 minutes - we stopped because we saw people holding up phones ready for 'something' aimed at the statue then saw the flames. There is a sort of lair looking area behind but it was gated and locked. We found it a little fun stop off.
