In 1708 Left Bank Ukraine was under the leadership of Hetman Ivan Mazepa which was in turn was under the overlordship of Russia under Peter the Great. In an attempt to gain Ukrainian independence Mazepa sided with the Swedish king against the Russian Empire in the Battle or Poltava. In retaliation for this perceived defection Czar Peter, sent one of his most trusted generals and friend, Alexander Menshikov to inflict revenge and send a message. The outcome was the Sack of Baturyn which essentially was the slaughter of the entire population of the Hetman's capital .
The memorial to this tragic event is a cross which can be found inside the grounds of the Fortress.
