Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Slow wine is here! The owner prides himself on this process as 99.5% of wine made in NZ is the fast wine approach. This winery on average, doesn’t release its wines until they are at least 10 years old. I won’t put spoilers in because the owner has a number of surprising wine viniculture and viticulture practices that will add to your wine knowledge. Suffice it to say that he makes wine like the Romans did 2000 years ago. I’ve made the pilgrimage to this winery three times now and will go again. Totally recommend his Sauvignon blanc - try it. You’ll see!

I’ve read some reviews that were posted before mine that said the owner was rude and other unflattering personal comments. It can appear that way because his passion is his oenology and it pays to listen to somebody who has professorial knowledge on the subject of slow wine. I am reminded of a comment I had when visiting an Alsace vineyard when I asked how do they market their products. Their reply was that if you liked their food and wine, enjoy! If you don’t, go somewhere else ( or words to that effect). This the owner of a similar outlook!

The best wine, just the best. David is an interesting, knowledgeable gracious host. Every time we visit we learn something new about his stunning aged wines and local knowledge of the island. Always worth a visit and an intellectual chat. Views to die for if you ask where to look.

Amazing wines and loads of fun. Lance is an interesting character who is the owner and winemaker. The wines are unlike anything you will try anywhere else. Lance has a direct manner however listen to his stories and talk about his passion and he will keep you entertained. Well worth the visit.

don’t miss this one!… If you can get in. If you love, good wine and want to learn more about the process of making wine the right way then this is a must for you! We enjoyed our wine tasting with Lance. He is an authentic wine maker full of knowledge, and his Vineyard produces numerous excellent wines. This experience was one of our favorites on our stay at Waiheke Island. We have experienced wine tastings around the world. If you want a fluffy, touristy, place with a gift shop, this is not your place. If you want an authentic experience, this is it!

We had a great tasting with Lance as part of an organized tour (Waivino). His dry wit is only outmatched by his knowledge of winemaking. It was really interesting to hear about Lance’s method of making natural wines and his approach to aging wines until he thinks they are approaching the appropriate maturity rather than merely being drinkable. If you have an opportunity to purchase any of his 2010 vintage wines, you will not be disappointed (we had the 2010 cab franc).

Wine is good, but owner acts like he is the second coming of Christ... Demeaned every other winery in Waiheke because they don't all wait 10 years to sell a bottle of mid tier wine. Relax my guy. He had to talk down every one else to make his wine seem more palatable. Definitely not worth the $30 tasting fee, plenty of better wineries to get tastings.

On a wineries tour on Waiheke Island, a most wonderful place on Earth, Jurassic Ridge was the low point of the tour. And the only exception to the overall fabulous experience on the island.
This winery features a cranky, rude winemaker, continuously talking people down and showing a bad attitude. Self centric. A self-declared erudite, with answers on questions (whether asked or imagined) starting with "your question makes no sense" or "X has nothing to do with Y as you say" etc. Wines in a range with mediocre as the upper bound, made based on philosophical principles rather than talent and pride, or care for quality or consistency. Aired blanket disparaging opinions about wines and winemaking everywhere else in the world, pretty much.
SO many great wineries on Waiheke, save your time, money and neurons by avoiding this one.

Hard to judge the wine because the experience left a bitter aftertaste. The winemaker was rude and either completely ignored us or - the few times we tried to talk to him or ask a question about a particular wine - openly mocked us in front of the only other group that was there. We might not know everything about wine but we were genuinely interested and respectful. We should have just walked out but we were raised to treat others how we would like to be treated so we stayed until the end and then waited forever to pay for the most upsetting wine tasting we have ever experienced. There are nicer wines and places on Waiheke to spend an hour of your life.

Don’t be fooled by its diminutive stature in comparison to its neighbours; this is a totally different vineyard and a wholly different experience. Lance comes across as hugely experience and passionate about his craft, and you will get a different outlook on winemaking here, whilst sampling some brilliant wines too. Fully recommend a walk-in.
