Take your time and sip the wine
May 2021
Jurassic Ridge Vineyard is not far from where the ferry from Auckland docks. The wine is made according to wholistic principles. The proprietor (and winemaker) is very informative, and proud of his wines. Waiheke is an "island of wine" and this is one winery you shouldn't miss. Just take your time and sip the wine.

If you're looking for an understated hidden gem
Mar 2021
Jurassic Ridge is an astonishing hidden gem on Waiheke.
This was the best wine wasting experience of any that we had on the island.
Lance, the owner/winemaker is extremely knowledgeable about wine making and the effects that additives, used by other winemakers to "hurry the process along" can have on the wine. Lances wines speak for themselves - they are cellared until he deems them good enough to release and this is something he can be proud of - some of these wines are up to ten years old before being released for sale.
We were blown away at the intimacy and personality of this wine tasting.
You will come out far more knowledgeable than when you went in and glad you visited.

Experience that ruins the wine
Feb 2021
Hard to judge the wine because the experience left a bitter aftertaste. The winemaker was rude and either completely ignored us or - the few times we tried to talk to him or ask a question about a particular wine - openly mocked us in front of the only other group that was there. We might not know everything about wine but we were genuinely interested and respectful. We should have just walked out but we were raised to treat others how we would like to be treated so we stayed until the end and then waited forever to pay for the most upsetting wine tasting we have ever experienced. There are nicer wines and places on Waiheke to spend an hour of your life.

One of our favourite vineyard experiences
Dec 2020
This vineyard and Lance was the highlight of our trip out of all the vineyards we visited. Lance, the owner/winemaker/host.... is extremely passionate about what he does and so knowledgeable - we thought we knew a lot about wine until we started talking and listening to Lance. Jurassic Ridge Vineyard and winery are Certified by Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and the wines are as authentic and natural as you can get and are aged so much longer than other wines elsewhere. They are only released once they have Lance's stamp of approval and this can be some 5+ years later. Being only one of 4% in the entire world whereby the wine has no added additives whatsoever. We got to taste a wide selection of fabulous tasting wines and needless to say came away with quite a few bottles to enjoy at home with friends. A wonderful experience and we will definitely be visiting again. Highly recommended!

Interesting and worthy of a stop
Jul 2020
Quaint old style wine tasting room with a very knowledgeable host and winemaker. Worth a visit if in the area. A world apart from the more commercial operations nearby. Opens am and from 2pm wed-Sunday

Provisional rating
Sep 2019
I'm saying 5 rating in lieu of evidence to the contrary because when we called here the winery was closed. I'm really disappointed because both the wine and the winemaker/proprietor sound interesting. So I'm sounding a note of advice to other would be visitors here, to ring ahead to avoid being disappointed. Next time I will follow my own advice!

Premium wine, premium arrogance
Feb 2019 • Couples
Great wine but Lance is an extremely arrogant wine maker. If you want to experience great wine and some time being patronised be sure to make a visit.

Get Ready For An Oenology Master Class

Not for the narcissistic wine enthusiast: owner/operator Lance Blumhardt will take on and skewer much common wisdom about wine making. Fact is, the wines are excellent, aged beyond what other wine companies would consider before release and comparatively reasonably priced.

Yes, he could use more help (we had to ring the bell 3 times to gain entry) and he'd likely be a difficult boss. However, for customers it means understanding exactly what went on to make the wines and how to evaluate them.

One of the highlights of our Waiheke visit.

Quarky and delicious
Dec 2018 • Couples
Go to Jurassic Ridge and spend some time with the winemaker - learn about the geology, the soil, and the vines that make this wine taste so great. At the recommendation of another winemaker, we walked right past Mudbrick and went here, and so glad we did. The wines were delicious - best syrah we've had on our 3 week trip through NZ. The setting is small and intimate, and the winemaker is serving wine and knowledge to those who are interested

Great Reds, Eccentric Owner
Dec 2018 • Friends
This winery has great potential, maybe the best wines we tried, but the owner should invest in help. He might sell more. It is neat to meet the owners when they are happy. I can’t say that he was. He is 76 and said in a few years when he retires, he doesn’t know what will become of his project. He was a neurologist or something & not much interested in others or in the appearance of his shop which needs a good dusting!
