Overview
More
The Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre showcases the amazing history of the Snowy Mountains Scheme; from the early days of construction through to how it is operated by Snowy Hydro today. This is a must for any visitor to the Snowy Mountains region! The Centre houses a comprehensive exhibition hall including an extensive photographic collection, models, hands-on exhibits and interactive displays. You will find information about the Scheme such as engineering, the environment, the National Electricity Market, history, water management and power generation. Take your turn on the “power bikes” and see if you can peddle hard enough to power a TV, make some toast or boil a kettle. You will also find screens displaying the Scheme working in real time. See which generators are operating, how much electricity they are producing and the prices of electricity in the market.

the coverage of the history of the scheme and the integration of the scheme into the national grid was very interesting. It gave us a good start on our adventure to travel to the highlights of the scheme over the next 3 days

The Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre is a bit tiny compared to most museums nearby (Canberra). Considering that Snowy Hydro has a lot of historical value....100,000 (majority new migrants) helping to build this magnificent infrastructure, it would’ve been nice to include more information about the people...More

The snowy hydro exhibition is a must do. It is interesting and informative. The blood sweat and tears which all contributed to this amazing development is mind blowing. We would thoroughly recommend a visit.

This small museum houses the history of the building of The Snowy Mountain Scheme, has a clean and modern rest room facility and a cafe and gift shop. There is ample parking and picnic facilities. It’s a good alternative to other rest places in Cooma.

This is a must see place if you're passing through Cooma. Full of informative and educational stuff, together with lots of history. We took our son along, but we learned just as much as he did, particularly historical facts. A great Aussie experience.

Last time I visited Cooma was in 1963! We were on a school trip of the Snowy scheme. Here, now, you can experience the whole thing in one spot. The display is excellent and shows the magnitude of the job and the resilience of the...More

An amazing story of success. Would this scheme ever have been built if not for the circumstances of post war availability of labour? However, I did think the display was a little tired, buttons not working etc. and didn't really do justice to the fantastic...More

We grew up with stories of the Snowy River Scheme, so wanted more detail while in the area. A man at the Discovery Centre put on a doco in the theatre for us. This gave a good oversight to the scheme, and to the people...More
