We stopped at Dudley's cottage for a rest and drink during our tour of Arrowtown and were intrigued by the large water trough. The owner said it was for gold panning demonstrations and for $10 we could try our luck. After being shown the technique of swirling water around the pan to get rid of all but the heaviest of sediment we tried. After a few minutes of panning we could see small flecks of brightly coloured yellow, gold!! Nowhere near being worth the price of a cup of coffee but even so, we had struck rich. We now have a small phial of gold flakes and a certificate to prove it.

The little ones were thrilled to do gold panning in the trough. My son kept saying he stroke it rich as he found GOLD flecks. So amusing.
We then made our way to Arrow River to try our luck. Sorry, no gold here. Lots of sandflies though. Bring your repellent!

The promise of excellent whitebait fritters drew me along to Dudleys and it did not disappoint
Garden tables, whitebait was fresh and perfectly cooked.
Tea was served in an old school china cup and saucer, seriously cool to see.
Staff excellent and friendly, shall be back before the whitebait runs are over.

We travelled from Wanaka to Arrowtown to have lunch and do some gold panning here. Despite their website saying they were open 9 - 5pm they were ‘closed for nsintenance’ See you in August.
Very poor - put a note on your website if you’re closed. A wasted trip and disappointed children.

Unfortunately this is an incorrect review as it is clearly stated on our welcome page on our website that we are currently closed. As you did not even do the activity it is perhaps unfair to leave a 1 star rating. We are very sorry you felt you had a wasted trip, we know it is hard travelling with children.

The kids wanted to try gold panning and Dudleys Cottage give short lessons on this. The kids had a great time and even found flecks of gold which they got to take home in a small vial. The lady teaching them the art of gold panning was great with them and super friendly. We recommend this activity for kids as it is short and they stay interested. At $10 each its pretty good value for money.

I LOVE sitting in the garden at Dudley’s cottage. It is relaxed, you can take your dog there and the coffee is consistently excellent. Today I tried the whitebait pattie. OMG the best I’ve had in a long time. So good. Thank you Ali and your lovely staff.

So there are 2 listings for Dudley's Cottage (next to the historic Chinese settlement) in Arrowtown. This listing, being under 'activity' should be for the shop.
As you enter the cottage you step straight in to the shop. It has some interesting items, and the prices are middle to high.
Very much aimed at the tourists, but s good little shop. Once you've finished browsing you can buy a drink and food at the very good cafe.

We chose this cafe due to its reviews and we were very pleased we had. Arrowtown is full of places to eat, none of which look particularly inspiring, but Dudley’s is a breath of fresh air. It is just off the main drag, down by the Chinese settlement, so easily overlooked. There is a small menu, with items like toasted sandwiches, bacon and egg pie, lamb pastie, dumplings, scones and whitebait fritters. There are also specials. Our whitebait fritters were spot on, complete with white bread and a slice of lemon. We also shared a very nice savoury scone. The coffee was excellent. We sat outside and had a really nice, relaxing lunch. The service was very good. The cafe is part of an excellent gift shop, with quality goods, not tourist tat.

We wondered in to a wonderfully friendly welcome from people who were genuinely interested in us. As it was closing time we didn’t expect to be able to eat...how wrong we were. We had a drink and a snack which was delicious and then had a mooch around the shop, where we bought a few souvenirs. Such a refreshing change to receive genuinely warm welcome. We would thoroughly recommend a visit here all set in lovely surroundings.

Did not take part in Gold Panning but visited mainly for Coffee and Scones.
