Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.

We visit arrowtown-queenstown area regularly but have never tried gold panning.. We saw dudleys cottage and decided that we would have a coffee and let our 5 year old have a turn.. It is a very interesting activity to do and great for both kids and adults.. Bella who helped us was very helpful and knowledgeable and pleasant.. Also great with kids.. Very good value, good coffee and was great to be able to take the gold u found away as a momento plus a certificate. I really recommend this activity as queenstown can be very heavy on prices if u want to do activities.. This was not.. Afterwards definitely take a walk thru the old Chinese gold mining settlement right nnext to dudleys.. It is both fascinating and beautiful and free.

We stopped over at Dudley's cottage whilst looking at the Chinese Gold Miners village. They were very friendly and had excellent coffee. We loved this place so much that we came back again at the end of our trip, the merchandise they sold there was almost all made in New Zealand and not the typical stuff you find in souvenir stores.

Overall, great atmosphere, nice people and food & good potential presents.

I was in Arrowtown with my partner over new year and we thought we would give gold panning a try. It was lots of fun and a great activity for a very reasonable price. The staff were friendly and helpful and gave lots of advice on best practice! The vial of gold (panned with our own fair hands) and a certificate finished it off nicely, highly recommended : )

The cottage is lovely, the merchandise tempting, but what really makes it worth a visit is the gold panning. Get a lesson, then hire a pan and a shovel, and head down to the river. No, you won't find anything. That's not the point. The experience is still unforgettable.

The best hot chocolate on South Island. And amazing brownies.

Good souvenirs and historical items.

Also good advice on sites around Arrowtown.

We had a small group with 4 children. We paid for the children to learn how to pan for gold. Scott was helpful and informative, also answering my questions and provided equipment and instructions how to use it. As we were to go gold panning in the south island.
All the children found gold with Scotts assistance and also recieved a certificate.
Not just an activity we recommend but also the opportunity to learn how to be successful gold finding.
Thanks Scott will let u know how successful we are.

The kids wanted to try gold panning and Dudleys Cottage give short lessons on this. The kids had a great time and even found flecks of gold which they got to take home in a small vial. The lady teaching them the art of gold panning was great with them and super friendly. We recommend this activity for kids as it is short and they stay interested. At $10 each its pretty good value for money.

I LOVE sitting in the garden at Dudley’s cottage. It is relaxed, you can take your dog there and the coffee is consistently excellent. Today I tried the whitebait pattie. OMG the best I’ve had in a long time. So good. Thank you Ali and your lovely staff.

So there are 2 listings for Dudley's Cottage (next to the historic Chinese settlement) in Arrowtown. This listing, being under 'activity' should be for the shop.

As you enter the cottage you step straight in to the shop. It has some interesting items, and the prices are middle to high.

Very much aimed at the tourists, but s good little shop. Once you've finished browsing you can buy a drink and food at the very good cafe.

We chose this cafe due to its reviews and we were very pleased we had. Arrowtown is full of places to eat, none of which look particularly inspiring, but Dudley’s is a breath of fresh air. It is just off the main drag, down by the Chinese settlement, so easily overlooked. There is a small menu, with items like toasted sandwiches, bacon and egg pie, lamb pastie, dumplings, scones and whitebait fritters. There are also specials. Our whitebait fritters were spot on, complete with white bread and a slice of lemon. We also shared a very nice savoury scone. The coffee was excellent. We sat outside and had a really nice, relaxing lunch. The service was very good. The cafe is part of an excellent gift shop, with quality goods, not tourist tat.
