Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

We hired a couple of bikes to ride along the track next to the river and the guys are very friendly. We also took the tandem trailer bike for our 4 yr old so we didnt have to worry about him getting too tired. Unfortunatley I was a little out of shape and didnt get as far as I wouyld have like to have but they will come pick you up so you dont have to wheel your bikes back.

Exciting. Good tour guide. Sceneries are awesome. Free tea and cakes. Gold panning is fun. I enjoyed every bumps and highs of the ride.

We had a great afternoon with Fleur on a 4WD trip to Macetown. Fleur is a great driver and is very knowledgable passionate about the history of Arrowtown and Macetown. She showed how a Defender performs too. The pikelets were great too. Overall a great afternoon topped with some gold panning to finish.

Three of us getting towards the end of a 23 day trip around NZ went out on the Skippers Canyon Tour with this company this morning. Fran was our driver. One member of the party was extremely scared of heights and it is a narrow track around the edge of the canyon, all the way.
It was a brilliant trip. We ALL throughly enjoyed it. It was so interesting and so scenic. Fran was a great driver, very understanding and helpful, informative and kind. It really has been the highlight of our two island trip, so far. Fran even made us hot chocolate and tea plus cooked us Scotch pancakes in the open air at the old school house, part way through our trip. It was also amazing to see how many species of British plants and birds (would you believe it) were brought from home by the miners! If you're hesitating because of the narrow track, don't worry. It really is wonderful and not scarey at all. Even the height phobic member of our party enjoyed it and got out of the car to take shots, walk across the suspension bridge etc etc.
We're off out with Fran again tomorrow to a different area and set of scenery.

Above was my original post on here. Then I discovered that I couldn’t put a separate post on for the other tour we did with this company and Fran so I deleted it and am adding this for the Glenorchy Wilderness Tour we also did.

The next day three of us went on the Glenorchy Wilderness Tour. It was nowhere near as good. It was pleasant and a long way but not thrilling. One of our party expressed a wish to see the Hobbit film sites. He was assured that he would but all he was really shown were some trees were filming.
All three of us were rather underwhelmed by this tour. It was pleasant but really was just a nice drive with very little shown to us and/or very little to see. The mountains were nice, there was a river and a lake but nothing of great note that we had not seen elsewhere.

So I rather agree with an earlier review below for this Particular tour with Southern Explorer. It largely seemed like a waste of time and money whereas the other tour we did was good.

Fran again made us the pancakes and coffee which was very sweet but really a waste of half an hour. The only good thing about it was that one of our party spotted an amazing bracket fungus in the forest where we stopped for the snack. Other than that, the half an hour could have been used to see something of note.
And that's it. Basically we didn't see anything of note. What saved it for me was that I asked Fran to drop me off on the route back so that I could do a short walk to Sylvan Lake and back on my own and then hitch a lift back. It was magical. The other two people with me were not up to the hike so they returned to Queenstown.

So one tour deserved a 5 rating and one a 2, hence the overall rating of 3

This was one of the highlights of our trip to New Zealand. This trip goes to what seems like the end of the world. You go on roads that are gravel and on the edge of mountains. It was exhilarating. Highly recommend if you want out of this world views. They stop and you go pan mining for gold. Halfway they stop at an old gold mining camp for refreshments. Highly recommend.

I booked a trip into Skippers Canyon for my partner's 50th birthday... What a fabulous day we had. The scenery is just incredible but equally we had the pleasure of spending the day with Fran. She is passionate about the environment she works in, but also, funny, engaging and an absolute source of local knowledge. It was a pleasure to spend a special day in her company...
Definitely the highlight of our visit to this area...

My partner and I did the half day tour to Macetown. While he is an avid offroader, I am less so, but we both had a really great time! The scenery is spectacular, and Macetown is definitely a must see. Our driver, Fran, gave us an endless commentary of stories about the people who had founded Macetown. Her knowledge of the history of this area is pretty astounding. We had a delicious morning tea at Macetown and loved every minute! Fran was even kind enough to turn around when I realized I had left my camera by the river.

All in all, this has been our favourite activity in the Queenstown area. Highly recommended.

I did the half day morning 4WD trip with driver Fran. It was awesome!! So many river crossings and 4WD tracks to drive. Fran gave us plenty of local knowledge and history of the gold mining days. She even made morning tea for us. what a legend!
Macetown is a must when visiting the Queenstown/Arrowtown region. Total worth your buck and educational with a sense of adventure. Would highly recommend hands down! We all left richer, literally! Panned for gold from the Arrow River and gained a few speckles. Thanks Southern Explorer for such a memorable experience.
