About
There are few places in the world where you get the sense of land emerging from the ocean — where you can trace the contours of the land down below the waterline, where sky, land and sea are continuous — and New Zealand’s Paroa Bay Winery and Estate is one of these places. Featuring three superb villas, a boutique vineyard, and our coastal-inspired restaurant Sage — we ensure every aspect of luxury is plentifully provided for. The first of our luxury villas, Tarāpunga, is named after the local seabirds, and nests high above the bay. With floor to ceiling windows and an infinity pool on an expansive outdoor entertaining area, Tarāpunga truly brings the incredible scenery to the fore. Our second villa, Weka, is a smaller but beautifully designed residence, and available for reservation concurrently with Tarāpunga. Our third villa, Vineyard Cottage, sits amongst the vines of our famed winery and enjoys views of the beautiful rolling green hills of both vineyard and native bush.

Dining at Sage restaurant
Feb 2021
The restaurant is elegant and the food is wonderful, as is the service. The shuttle service from Russell made it so much easier. It was a real treat to enjoy this wonderful location.

Elegant dining
Mar 2020
The hosts at our B&B suggested this would be a gem and it was. The table on the patio offered a great view. The dining experience was top notch. Would highly recommend it.

This relatively new winery is in a lovely setting with great views. They offer a wide selection of wines akin to everybody’s tasting.

The Most gorgeous holiday villa
Jan 2020 • Couples
Last month I had the great fortune to stay at The Tarapunga villa at Paroa Bay winery. This is a luxurious accommodation, gorgeously furnished with stunning views of the Bay of islands from every corner of the house . The infinity pool invites you to jump in and stare at the view. The villa has a home cinema, tennis courts, a gym, Badminton, bicycles, Golf buggies which we used to admire the beautiful surrounding nature and manicured landscape of the winery and also to access the private beach. There is also an annexed villa that can accommodate another family or grown up kids. The place is perfect in every way(it even has, Sage, next door, the best restaurant in the area ). It’s a perfect Accommodation for a perfect holiday I had the time of my life. I highly recommend it.

Fantastic View, Excellent Food
Dec 2019
We went on 28 December after rescheduling from their Christmas Dinner. The site is easy to find, but is neither walkable from Russel nor accessible to public transport - car or Taxi (ample parking). The restaurant is located on a hilltop with a spectacular view north and east over the Bay of Islands. There is indoor and shaded outdoor seating. The menu has a limited number of items but the food was some of the best we had in NZ. Takes some work to make it child-friendly if you have a picky eater, but the staff was accommodating. The wine was excellent, paired beautifully with the food - we took some home. There were no tasting flight available with the dinner menu, alas, but the waiter gave us excellent recommendations based on the food we ordered.

Don't come here go to Omata winery
Jan 2020 • Couples
We walked in and asked to do some wine tasting. Their website says "come to our cellar door today to sip our handcrafted NZ wines while enjoying the vineyard's heavenly atmosphere". Not the case. You can only try our wines if you are eating, apparently. The staff were rude and inhospitable. We had elderly parents and family members with us and we were told we couldn't stay as they were full. Yet there were many spare tables. Very snobby and rude. However can't rate Omata winery highly enough. Go there instead.

Exceptional
Jan 2020
Paroa Bay's Sage Restaurant has it all. The view looking out over The Bay of Islands and Pacific Ocean is breathtaking. The building whilst simple is elegant and tastefully designed and furnished. The food was the best we have experienced in Northland; delicious, fresh, appetizing and beautifully presented. We drank the Paroa Rose and Chardonnay which were both lovely. The service was charming and unpretentious. What a great spot!

Beautiful
Dec 2019 • Couples
We had lunch and wine tasting in the restaurant. We sat outside on the porch and the uninterrupted views were absolutely stunning. The wine and food were great. Staff were helpful but none more so than the wonderful Rachel who picked us up and took us back to our campsite so that we could both enjoy the wine. She was so warm, friendly and informative. We had an excellent afternoon and highly recommended visiting this beautiful place.

Brilliant food and stunning views
Nov 2019 • Couples
Sage restaurant is worth the winding drive to the end of the road. Luch was the shared salmon with buckwheat side salad. And the divine sago pudding. The word divine is insufficient. Of, did I mention the wine tastings?

What a Treat!
Oct 2019 • Couples
This Winery and Sage Restaurant are spectacularly located looking out onto an island filled sea.
We came for an evening meal,(well just a drink but the menu looked do good!) and the view and changing light were perfect as was the wine, service and food.
The menu is well thought out with a good selection of small plates and sharing plates s well as individual for those who want their own dish.
We shared a duck confit for two and finished with a memorable pineapple, chilli, sago dessert that Im still thinking about...
Will have to return for a long lunch!
