This is a good stop just for the photo opportunity let alone the flagstaff history. You can drive up and it’s only a short walk to either the flagstaff and the sundial. On a nice day, the views across the bay (to Waitangi even) are...More

We drove to the lookout, mainly because the weather was bad and once up there we didn't get very good views either. Decided we'd go back the next morning on our way out of town, so we drove up again. Second time weather was better...More

The walk up the hill on the road is lovely through the greenery and ogling other peoples' houses and the last section up steps can be possibly slippery so take care. You can also drive up close to the Flagstaff which might make it easier....More

A must see when you visit Russel new zealand. It offers you a panoramic view of the bay. Russel has kept its serenity even after being considered the first capital of nz. A popular picture worthy location.

The hill is 98 metres above sea level but the walk up is well graded. We went via the road and short section via steps, not starting along the beach as it was high tide. We walked all the way down by another road to...More

Upside - fabulous views and historical site at the top. Downside - almost vertical climb to get there. Probably worth doing. Probably worth driving up and then the view's within a few steps.

We found this place almost by accident, It’s a significant spot in the history of New Zealand but you would never know it today, there is information explaining how the flagstaff was repeatedly cut down in the old days when the treaty was being argued...More

What a great view. Beautiful scenery and a photographers paradise. Plenty of cloud to add a backdrop and offer some challenges with light and angles.

To work up an appetite for lunch, take the ferry from Paihia and then go for a walk up the Flagstaff Hill (it starts to the right if you are looking at the beach). Alternatively, you can drive! The view is tremendous and you get...More

Yes no problem, there is a small car park at the top with a short walk to the flagstaff and there is a seat too.
