This site can be approached in two directions. One by vehicle or walking from Russell on the road which runs through the town. Second is circular for walkers through the bush. There are two ways for walkers to return to the town. Maps for both...More

Unless you are fit I recommend driving up to top of flagstaff hill. The road is not easy to find as it looks like a drive up to a property and is on a sloped bend

Truely magical.... make sure you walk both the sundial hill and flagstaff hill. It was such a beautiful look out and a great way to get your sense of direction

The drive up is interesting and the turn into the driveway is not for the fainthearted. The views are spectacular especially on a sunny day. And there are two different walking routes back down to Russell if you fancy a bit of exercise

This is not a hard long walk, but you will be delighted with some wonderful views once you get to the top. I walked up flagstaff Hill within 10 mins today... Its 100 metres in height, so it's pretty steep. You nearly get a 300...More

It's a very steep walk with steps up to the top of this hill, but it's an excellent look out and lovely views. You can drive most of the way up if you feel lazy!

Me and hubby took a passenger ferry from Paihia. We packed spare clothes, snacks, sunscreen and wore comfortable athletic wear which I would recommend doing if you want to explore the nature trails around the island. We walked from the pier up to flag staff...More

Worth the climb but suggest the track up on the north side just out of Russell. Well worth a photo and the view is panoramic.

We had a bit of rain on our day in Russell, but it eased off enough for us to take another trip up to Flagstaff Hill for the beautiful view. Once again we drove up rather than the more strenuous hike up. Would recommend going...More

Yes no problem, there is a small car park at the top with a short walk to the flagstaff and there is a seat too.
