Flagstaff hill has the best view ever! On a sunny day is just the best. Beautiful view of Russell over looking the harbour to Paihia & Waitangi!

On a clear day the view from here is stellar, plus the history as part of the Maori wars is interesting. We drove up, the hike would be very steep.

Drive or hike from the Village of Russell to the top of Flagstaff hill for a spectacular view of the Bay of Islands, Waitangi, Russell, Paihia, and the open ocean beyond. It’s often windy, so dress accordingly and give yourself time to read the plaques...More

The scrub around the notorious flagpole has recently been removed affording sensational views of the Bay of Islands. There is now an app which is free to download Hikoi Tahi walking tours which people may find hugely informative. Hope to be back one day soon.

You can drive up and it is a short climb. Well worth the effort for the lovely views. Road is narrow.

The history here is amazing as is the 360 degree view of the Bay of Islands. Very close to the town of Russell. I would definitely recommend this to anyone visiting Russell.

This is a good stop just for the photo opportunity let alone the flagstaff history. You can drive up and it’s only a short walk to either the flagstaff and the sundial. On a nice day, the views across the bay (to Waitangi even) are...More

We drove to the lookout, mainly because the weather was bad and once up there we didn't get very good views either. Decided we'd go back the next morning on our way out of town, so we drove up again. Second time weather was better...More

The walk up the hill on the road is lovely through the greenery and ogling other peoples' houses and the last section up steps can be possibly slippery so take care. You can also drive up close to the Flagstaff which might make it easier....More

Yes no problem, there is a small car park at the top with a short walk to the flagstaff and there is a seat too.
