Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Great view of the bay and neighboring towns. You can drive or walk up on numerous trails. It is a steep walk, but the views are worth it.

After getting off of the ferry from Paihia, we set off to walk up to Flagstaff Hill. A lot easier if you have a car, by the way. Took about 20 minutes of walking from the ferry to get there uphill on the road (luckily not a lot of traffic). The views from the top, while windy, are quite beautiful. Read the story of the hill and look around. Worth it.

This walking trail provides great views of the Bay of Islands. There is a lookout where it is possible to drive and taken in the 360 degree views or it is an uphill walk along the side of the road from the town. The 2.5 km loop is a popular loop for hikers.
There are numerous short walks in the area as well.

There are two peaks, one with info boards and one with the flagstaff. I'd encourage you to read the info boards first and they give great facts about the historical significance of the area.
We walked up from the ferry terminal, and whilst the path was steep in some places it was relatively easy. It is well signposted.
The views are lovely and it's nice to be able to see the Waitangi Treaty Grounds opposite.

On this spot in the 1840s, Māori leaders cut down the Union Jack signal flag four times in protest of the British government. This act marked the beginning of the New Zealand Land Wars. At the base of the flagstaff is a plaque describing the conflagration. It wasn’t until a fifth flagstaff was built that honored the unity of Māori and Europeans. Panels around the structure provide information on the significance and importance of this site. Enjoy the 360-degree view of the entire Bay of Islands. A large mosaic sundial is nearby and was built to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the NZ Institute of Surveyors in 1988. The sundial plate is a mosaic map of the Bay of Islands. Recommend seeing.

Quite a piece of history. Don't believe the signpost at the bottom of the hill as ìt is significantly double the distance. However, a nice walk on a sunny day.
