Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The Coastal Walkways in and around Russell can't be beat. A lot of time and energy is spent with their upkeep. Our favorite is to walk from where we were house sitting to Okiato or the other way to the town of Russell. The boardwalk through the mangrove trees is incredible.

Well worth the time to check out the tracks. It has 4 stages and we only did 1,2 and 3. The walk over the mangroves is nice, you can spot the fish in the water as you walk over. There was no toilets nearby. Definitely need a moderate rate of fitness and not suitable for strollers.

when the weather is sunny then not much shade but the track is flat to easy going.Surrounded by vegetation and birds...water on one side and great views all round.

We did the walk as a couple one morning - from the car ferry terminal in Okiato all the way to Russel. Stages 1,2 and 3 are beautiful. The track is hilly at times, so a good level of fitness is required. The walk takes you through beautiful native forests and mangroves.
When you get to stage 4 though (about 1/2 way from Okiato to Russel) the track is mostly along a busy road, which runs like a highway in holiday season. Nothing much to see, so I would definitely recommend to avoid it.

If you haven't the time or energy to complete it all, the part with the board walk is particularly lovely, and if you can combine it with walking to the winery it makes a very enjoyable day.

Board the ferry to Okiato, the very first Capital of New Zealand, and visit the Historic Reserve which served as New Zealands Capital for just a year in 1840/1841 until it was moved to Kororareka (renamed as Russell). From here you can join a well-formed track that crosses wetland flats, mature native bush (where kiwi can be heard if not seen) and a waterfront boardwalk through mangrove swamp at Orongo Bay, close to the roadside. The walkway then passes the headland before dropping down into Russell, from where you can catch another ferry back to Paihia. Allow 3.5 hours.

Quite demanding as there are lots of steps.
We only did stage 1,2 and 3, as there are plenty if shades to hide along the way.

Russell is such a lovely lovely town. Just about a 20 minutes ferry ride from Paihia and very quaint. Beautiful walking paths and great scenery. Did the Kiwi Parasailing and was shocked at how gentle it was upon 'lift off'. There's a great community type center with lots of handmade goods in town also.

A great walk through beautiful scenery. Took us 2.5 hours. The first part is thru bush and is challenging with some steep climbs. The latter part is easier.

Although this walkway is still a work in progress it is well worth doing. It is about 8 kms from Okiato to Russell starting across a series of ridges and then dropping to a series of boardwalks across the mangroves. They claim fern birds can be seen but I missed them. From the oyster farm it is mostly on the road. Rain was threatening so I did not muck about - Took about 2 hours, but you could have a more leisurely stroll.
