Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The Centre of New Zealand is not actually the geographic centre - it just marks the spot where surveys in New Zealand began.
Having said that, it’s near enough and it’s a pleasant walk and a cracking view of the Boulder Bank from the top.
Would not recommend flip flops and if it’s a hot day, take a bottle of water.

This is a fairly easy walk. Only about 15/20 minutes. It does get steep, but it isn’t hard. We had done Roy’s Peak in Wanaka (16km round trip), so found this one relatively easy. We ended up going after a day at the beach so didn’t have proper footwear. Make sure you have proper runners. The view at the top is ok.

Relatively short, moderately steep track to the summit for amazing views from the Centre of NZ.
There are a number of other trails which branch off, giving a good 90mins or so of prolonged walks, if you prefer to extend.
If you plan to do the other walks, take water as we didn't find any fountains and ended up quite parched.

I think the best and easiest walk to the summit is via Botanical Reserve. There is plenty of parking below and it's a short but steadily climbing 15 to 20 min walk.
If you access it via Walter Peak park then it's more of a 40 min walk, not as steep but long zig zags upwards then across farmland.
I went up the short way and down the long way. Nice view from the top but no drinking fountains so take water if you plan on doing more then up and down. Lots of walks branch off the walk so plenty of options.

We started this walk from the reserve at Botanical Hill at the end of Hardy St. There is signage to show you the way to the track. Although it is a long climb, it is a steady one and not too steep. It took us 30 min to reach the top (with our leki sticks ) and we are in our 70s. The view from the top was magnificent.. We arrived there at 4pm and and watched the sun slowing decend. No one was there at the time. But all the runners came as we went down

We decided that we had to do this as we have been to Cape Reinga ( as far North as you can go in New Zealand) and Bluff (as far South as you can go in New Zealand) so we just had to go for the middle.
The path is well formed but pretty steep and winding. It takes about 20 minutes to walk up so 40 minutes round trip. The view was quite something from the top.
Glad we did it.

Was exploring Nelson on a recent visit and saw the sign so just followed it to the top. Do wear good walking shoes as quite steep and has gravel so could be slippery. Great views of Nelson at the top with a pictorial guide of landmarks. Walked down and through Queen's Gardens and back to hotel.

Started from the car park nice and early to beat the heat. Easy to find. Well sign posted to the top. A moderate climb on rocky paths. I wore jandels still tho. Took the dog too.
views at the top are awesome 360 degree.

Gorgeous views. The walk is really good and in the beginning is pretty easy but it does get steeper the closer you get. But the views are incredible. We had a good walk up and down. Our 11 year old managed well.

Highly recommend doing this walk. We took our time & had a great walk up here on a lovely sunny ☀️ day.
The view from the top is spectacular & goes for miles & offers great photo opportunities 📸 both of the scenery & pictures of yourself with the needle showing the absolute centre. We enjoyed a little morning tea 🥪 before heading back along the hill walk.
