    Worth visiting while in Nelson
Small but accessible gallery. The special Kanohi Kitea exhibition was excellent. The comments by those photographed were quite moving and very insightful. Small shop with a good range. Didn’t try the cafe after reading visitors comments

    Wonderful place.
The gallery is next to Queen's Gardens, a charming space with interesting trees and ferns ,formal beds, a lake, fountains and birdlife. The gallery is small, but perfectly formed and told us much more about the practice and background to Tā Moko, the traditional Maori face tattooing, as well as having some great local and historic artwork. We found a link between Maori culture, the history of Nelson we'd heard about and one of our favourite books, This Thing of Darkness, which was nice. It also has a great cafe where we could look out over the gardens whilst having a spot of lunch. The food was top quality.

    Time Well Spent
We enjoy visiting an art gallery in any new City we visit and The Suter Art Gallery is a great one to go and enjoy. It is well laid out, has excellent exhibits which we found to be an interesting variety in its collection. The curators here do an excellent job. It is well worth a visit to The Suter Art Gallery when you visit Nelson. They also have a lovely gift shop.

There was a good selection of exhibits on when we visited - an interesting mix of styles. The onsite cafe was very good too, with a good selection of food

Whilst the Gallery is beautiful, calm, and well lit, in the midst of lovely gardens incidentally, we seemed to catch the exhibition S in between. We would love to be back in March when there is one around Captain Cook, but we will be gone by then. Very pleasant a sociable staff in the shop, with upscale offerings at reasonable prices. Cafe excellent but see other review.

We were looking forward to a good look at the gallery, but several of the exihibits were not available - they were reorganising. Shame really. Maybe next time.

Enjoyed the Suter, but found the food very expensive. It's good quality, but I've had just as good elsewhere in Nelson for half to two thirds the price. Coffee is very good though

Very interesting gallery. For me some of the heart is very unusual and different. They had some beautiful photos aotearoa. Some interesting ceramics. And there was a whole area about rubbish art. For example to had McDonald’s cups and Subway cups. It’s not what I appreciate but I can expect other people appreciating it

Nice art area, but didn’t really feel that the cafe is child friendly. I wouldn’t recommend going to the cafe if you have young children.

I visit the Suter Art Gallery often, as it has constantly changing exhibitions. This is a world class gallery with a highly professional staff, specialising in New Zealand art. Usually there are there are three or four different shows on display including one gallery where you can sometimes buy the works. The Suter has its own large collection funded by donations and gifts, and as well is innovative in showing other works from kiwi artists at home and abroad. The Wallace competition entries are being shown here for the first time - what a colourful, fascinating collection. If you can go Thursday and hear the Director talk about the works.
The Suter has a great shop which includes art materials as well as pottery and jewellery. Plus the cafe there is very good.It has super coffee.
