It probably doesn't help that when you view the cathedral from the CBD below you are looking at the back of it. It looks like concrete blocks but I understand some of it is Takaka Marble - which is not that attractive! The cathedral has...More

You don't have to be religious to appreciate the wonder of cathedrals, even modern ones. This one is very interesting. Though it has been some years since I was in it, there is a great amount of history behind the modern structure and the area...More

After quite a climb up steps, the entrance to the building was at the other end of the building. Once inside, the quiet and calm of the building was welcome. An interesting example of New Zealand Church architecture.

Worth a walk around (to see the building in depth, especially the stained glass) if time allows. Definitely not a must do though as you can see it just driving around the town

The exterior of this neo-Gothic (mislabeled "Art Deco" by Lonely Planet) cathedral is stark and not very appealing. The interior with its stained glass windows and commemorative plaques is far more attractive. The surrounding gardens are also nice.

We had lunch in one of the cafe's in the street below and then walked up the steps and around the cathedral- they had an enchanting Christmas tree exhibition - which was from a local competition. Christmas decorations are very subtle in NZ compared to...More

The church and gardens surrounding the church are beautiful. The steps are a nice sunny place to stop and take in the view

The gardens surrounding the Cathedral are actually what is worth visiting as well as the view from the back of the cathedral looking north along Trafalgar Street.
