A Nelson Landmark

Christ Church Cathedral is worth visiting, if only to see the magnificent stained glass windows and organ pipes.

A must see for all visitors to Nelson. Stunning yet modern looking church with beautiful stained glass windows. We were lucky to hear the organist practicing when we walked through.

Fantastic and worth a visit

One of the most lovely Cathedrals in NZ. So easy to get to, but up some steps and basically right in town. Its a landmark when approaching the city of Nelson. I would go again

Just beautiful

Worthwhile visiting the cathedral and gardens. There are some really good boards detailing the history of the cathedral and its grounds. There are many historic trees in the grounds. The church is made from marble from the Takaka Hill. Parliament Buildings are made of the same stone.

Loved our visit to the cathedral
Dec 2020 • Friends
The walk up the stairs to the cathedral was stunning and a very special time to visit because they had a display of decorated Xmas trees to look at. There was a very good pianist practicing, which added to the joy. The cathedral itself is quite beautiful and very well maintained. I would definitely recommend a visit to the cathedral when in Nelson.

Lovely

Very light and bright for a cathedral. Beautiful stained glass windows. Love the grey stone. So different to old world cathedrals but with obvious same heritage.

Organised

We must have organised our visit just right as the lovely organ was being played. Lots of opportunities to stop and mediate /pray during this visit. Various memorials, including to Robert Snodgrass, Thomas Brunner and Robert Baden-Powell. A beautiful building featured on the hill at the top of Trafalgar Street.

Impressive Approach
Feb 2020
The approach to Christ Church Cathedral is as impressive as the cathedral itself. It is accessed by climbing a long, stately granite staircase from Trafalgar Street to the top of Church Hill. The dominant feature of the cathedral is the 35m /115 ft tower at its entrance. At night, the tower is particularly beautiful with special effect lighting. The interior of the cathedral is somewhat modest, but it is decorated with richly colored stained glass windows. The large organ pipes are equally impressive.
