Highly recommend Gentle Cycling Co. We did a three day ride (along Great Taste Trail) from Nelson to Kaiteriteri with our children (aged 8 and 10). It’s a beautiful trip through changing landscapes - very picturesque with enough variety to keep the kids well entertained! Many great places to stay and eat, which Gentle Cycling organised or informed us about.
From the moment we were briefed to final pick up on the last day, the attitude of the company is one of positivity - happy to help and clearly want people to enjoy this very precious part of the world.
As one of my children was unwell two of us had to skip Day 2 of the ride in exchange for a slower day, this was no problem, for which we were grateful.
Along the way we met a number of other cyclists who were all happy to chat - but for many stretches we had the path to ourselves. It’s a great family adventure.
Mostly very easy riding, only in a few places did we decide to take it a bit easier and push the bikes (hills!) but many people would find the whole ride a breeze. It was only a few hours riding a day and then rest in lovely townships and quirky cafes.
Can’t recommend the Gentle Cycling Co enough.

Thanks so much for your review. Cycling the Great Taste Trail Coastal Route is certainly a great option for families and the cafes do provide a welcome incentive. Many people love the real fruit ice creams available at some of those cafes too! I hope you enjoyed the rest of your visit to our gorgeous part of the world.

This is an experience not to be missed. The Gentle Cycling Company organized our self-guided tour on the Great Taste Trail on coastal and rural cycleways meandering through some spectacular countryside with fabulous meal stops and overnight stays. Rose and her team are very professional, leave nothing to chance and plan a very personalised itinerary. Their attention to detail is amazing. ‘The customer is always right’ seems to be their overarching ethic. We elected for e-bikes from their wide range of bicycles - the machines were superb. The route they designed for us was quite thrilling, yet safe and absolutely scenic.

What an amazing tour provided by new owners/operators, Chris and Bernie! We commenced our tour with a 1 hour detailed brief of the Tapawera 4/5day loop. From there we took off to Mapua, ferry ticket from Rabbit Island to Mapua Wharf included. Was a lovely 22km, easy riding to our first destination. Spent our first night at the Puffed Peddler B&B and what an amazing place this is. Would of loved to stay at Coralie and Paul's a 2nd night. Our 2nd day took us through Motueka and Riwaka. Recommend a lunch break at the Toad Hall Cafe, (Brisket Toastie and Mushroom Blues Cheese Pie, both to die for!). After lunch, we took to Kaiteriteri where Chris and Bernie added an additional day/night for us. Really recommend a 2nd night there, not only to rest, but to spend some time in the waters. We spent the second day in Kaiteiteri hiring a kayak and paddled to Split Apple rock. Our 3rd official day of cycling took us to Tapawera. Make sure to have a big breakfast at the Ginger Dynamite Go Go Food & Coffee just before leaving Riwaka, its a big day ahead with not many cafes along the way, but such beautiful scenery. Take your time, no rush at all, with plenty of recreational reserves to stop for a breather of 2. Tapawera hotel is a wonderful place to rest your feet after a long day. 4th official day was the last, but this was by far our favorite section of the tour, which lead us through to Spooners Tunnel (torches required). Such wonderful history but the section AFTER the tunnel was even greater. A 5-6km stretch, of a decent which peddling is not required, nice cruise all the way down and through farm land. It was a sad end but will definitely love to do another tour with TGCC again in the future. Not only did Chris and Bernie go above and beyond with assisting in some personal matters, but they definitely nailed the accommodation, cafe/eatery and sight seeing recommendations, all on the head. Best of luck to the upcoming summer season!

We organised to do the 3 day (2 night) great taste trail cycle from Nelson to Kaiteriteri as the focus for a get together with 2 friends visiting from UK. The 4 of us had a great time. The cycling is not overly arduous but enough to justify the great food and drink stops along the route. (There is an ebike option if you're not bike fit) The accommodation organised for us by GCC was superb, particularly the B+B "Mapua on the Water" where the hosts were very welcoming and their house and location is perfect for the mapua stop. Scenery and weather was beautiful. Rose was extremely helpful and flexible putting the trip together with quick responses by email. Great value and great fun. Can wholeheartedly recommend. Would love to do it again.

Hi Dr Doug, thanks for posting a review of your recent "Coastal Classic" cycling trip on the Great Taste Trail. It's great to hear that you enjoyed the combination of food, drink, landscape, and of course the cycling. Do come again - our "Art & Food" trip is a fabulous variation on the ride you completed, with even more of everything! Cheers, Rose and the Gentle Cycling crew.

We stayed in Monaco which was a little away from gentles base, but their service was above and beyond. The bikes were dropped to us in the early morning with a friendly greeting Bernie came with all we needed for the day. Their local map was great, we stopped at a nearby cafe to plan our day, dropped into pics peanut butter (be sure to pre book tours - we got lucky as someone had cancelled) and then had lunch and tastings at a winery for lunch. Their easy voucher system meant we could wine taste at two places - and grab the ferry to Māpua were we spent an hour at the brewery and rui wine bar (one of their stops). The bikes were in great condition and Chris picked us up in the arvo. For two non regular bike riding individuals the track was flat and easy going, having lots of stops made it an enjoyable day. Thanks Bernie and Chris for a great day!

I booked the Gentle Cycling Company for a Corporate Group 1 and 1/2 day trail adventure from Stoke to Kaiteriteri and Bernie and Chris couldn't have been more helpful. I advised what I wanted to do and they made it happen and ensured everything went smoothly. Chris guided the group and ensured everyone had an enjoyable experience, and all bikes were charged and ready to go the next day.
Bernie assisted with accommodation, restaurant bookings, and places of interest to stop along the way, also liaising with another service provider in the area so everything lined up for the event.
The bikes were well maintained, and the basket on the back meant you didn't have to have a backpack on all day. They also had gel-seat covers for those that wanted them. Overall an amazing experience.

Many thanks Rochelle and apologies for the delayed response. One of the highlights of last season was supporting your corporate cycle ride up the coast. Chris really enjoyed guiding you all, and getting to know the team along the way. It was a privilege to work with you to plan a trip to suit your company's needs. I'm sure your adventure in the Abel Tasman National Park with Wilson's was the highlight of your trip! Thanks so much for choosing to use The Gentle Cycling Company and when you're back in the area, please let me know so I can pop over and say hi. Very best wishes to you and the team, Bernie and Chris :-)

We were 4 friends wanting to ride through the Spooner Tunnel. We were transported, with bikes, from the The Gentle Cycle Company to the cafe at Kohatu. My wife and I hired E Bikes and our friends had their own bikes. Started with a coffee and cake then biked the track and through the tunnel.
Stopped at the recommended cafe for lunch in Brightwater at The Villa. This was very nice.
Continued on back to Stoke. Exhilarating day out and the bikes were good quality.
Would recommend.

Thanks Tony and Brigit, it was our pleasure to get you to the start of the cycle back to Nelson and well done on doing so well. It's a good distance and has nice landscapes to enjoy along the way. Definitely one of my favourites along the Great Taste Trail. Thanks for using us and for leaving a review. Very best wishes, Bernie and Chris

Bernie and Chris put together the best trip along the Great Taste trail which allowed me to bike from Stoke to Kaiteriteri to join my Abel Tasman trip. I did this as a solo ride with two overnight stays, and their restaurant/winery/brew recommendations were perfect. The accommodations were excellent as well - I only wish I had spent a second night in Mapua, a lovely little town. Gentle Cycling went above and beyond, and Bernie checked with me every evening to make sure all was well. Highly recommend Gentle Cycling to arrange a bike trip in the Nelson area.

Many thanks Linda, and apologies for the delayed response. We're so pleased you had a great time cycling the Great Taste Trail through to Kaiteriteri. Continuing on into the Abel Tasman National Park with Wilson's is always a wonderful was to extend your Nelson Tasman adventure. Thank you so much for choosing to use The Gentle Cycling Company! Wishing you all the very best, Bernie and Chris :-)

We wondered if we were capable of this 50km bike ride, but absolutely breezed it. The owners were so helpful and knowledgeable, steered us to the right ride for us and away we went. Beautiful Nelson coastal ride and then inland to visit gorgeous wineries complete with pre-arranged wine tasting and platter. Also visited quaint towns along the way. So pleased we have done it and has encouraged us to do more. Thank you to this Company, well done.
