Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Had a fantastic fly fishing trip with Mike. I caught by far the biggest trout of my life, saw even bigger fish and learned a lot.

The location was worth visiting, even without the great fishing. A breath taking place.

I immediately booked for 2025.

I helicoptered in to sublime unblemished wilderness on the South Island to fly fish with Latitudes guide Cory Scott, who excelled in spotting trout, teaching me how to catch them, and helping me (74 years-old) across fast-moving boulder-strewn rivers. And administrator Nans was exceptionally helpful with organising my trip beforehand!

This was my second trip with Southern Latitude Guides. Nans handled the whole booking process seamlessly and booked me with Hans again for a 10 day camping and fishing trip. The weather was patchy in places and Hans went above and beyond what is normally expected to get us onto fishable water when the rivers blew out. Not only is Hans a consummate professional but more importantly he’s a fantastic bloke and I enjoyed spending 10days with him. Han’s also taught me some advanced casting and line management techniques and I’m now a better fisherman for that advice. If you’re looking for a trip that will stay in your memory for ever then look no further. Just a quick tip for this type of challenging water. Do yourself a favour and make sure that your fitness level is up to scratch so you can make the most of the opportunities available for you. Being able to walk on uneven ground and carrying a pack all day is the norm in NZ, a bit of time in the gym won’t hurt either and do your casting practice before you come. Sometimes these clever fish only give you one shot. I took my own gear however Hans also had top quality Guideline equipment available as well. Some Euro nymph fishing was required in the deep fast sections and Hans provided that gear for me. I will look no further than Hans when booking my next trip to NZ.

I used Southern Latitude Guides to book 4 days of fishing with Cory Scott. Nans helped me coordinate the trip of a lifetime. We put on lots of miles and I caught lots of big NZ trout. If you are a skilled and adventurous fly angler, and eschew the limitations of fishing from a lodge, seriously consider Southern Latitudes Guides to help coordinate logistics and connect you with New Zealand's best guides.

Our trip with Hans was hands down the most amazing fishing experience we have ever had. As a fly fishing guide myself, I learned so much from Hans, not just technical skills to improve my angling, but I also walked away from the trip with things I plan to implement in my own guiding career.

Hans was incredibly hardworking, patient, knowledgeable, and overall just fun to be around. We had so many interesting conversations about fishing and the industry. I didn’t just walk away from the trip with amazing memories, but a friend as well.

Hans worked very hard to put us on fish. Not only did my partner and I land our personal best Brown Trout, we also had some incredible numbers on the last day of the trip. We will definitely be coming back to fish with Hans again.

The whole trip wouldn’t have been so amazing without Nans working so hard behind the scenes. She was so accommodating, and her communication is impeccable. We have some dietary restrictions, and she made sure that everything we needed was accounted for. She answered all of our questions and made sure that our trip was everything we were hoping for.

Whatever you want, Hans and Nans will make it happen. I have never fished with a more knowledgeable and experienced guide. Thank you both so much for everything and we can’t wait to come back.

My son and I had an amazing couple of days wade fishing with Hans in the Nelson area. Hans is an incredibly knowledgable fisherman, with great local fly patterns he creates at his vice especially for the day at hand and delivers in perfectly engaging and entertaining German/Kiwi combo fashion. I live in Montana and am spoiled by some great trout fishing, but nothing compares to the experience of wading crystal clear rivers and sight fishing to the big browns of New Zealand. Thanks again to Hans, Nans and the amazing team at Southern Latitude Guides for making it happen. I can't wait for another return trip some day....hopefully soon. My only advise to fellow travelers going to New Zealand is to stay longer and fish more with Hans and the crew at Southern Latitude Guides. Tight lines!

Southern Latitude Guiding is a thoroughly professional company. Nans is efficient, friendly and a great communicator.

Our guide, Hans, was outstanding. He was also patient. He took us to water that held plenty of fish, and despite our difficulties with the more technical lies we caught more than enough.

It would take years to learn the area and fly choices without their assistance. I would definitely return.

Southern Latitudes are the best organised guiding organisation in New Zealand. All administrative options are covered by Nans so that the experience for the angler is maximised.

I had the good fortune to go out with Hans for the day whom I knew has the reputation for having arguably the best fish spotting abilities in these islands. I was not disappointed. He demonstrated exceptional domain knowledge and patience throughout the day. Fly choice was incredibly effective.

We had a fabulous day and purposefully worked our way upstream spotting feeding fish all along the way. (in the Nelson area).

The fishing was extremely technical and utterly reliant on pin point casting accuracy, a standard that I struggled to achieve. The rocks were like black ice as I clumsily hopped from rock to rock. Hans was patient, friendly knowledgeable and instructional throughout the session.

The end result was a phenomenal day’s fishing resulting in a personal best brown that made everything worth while.

Highly recommended if you want to translate dreams to realities. Thanks Hans for a wonderful day that I certainly will store in my imagination for a long time. Well done to Nans for her superb administration.
