Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

6 of us hiked the Heaphy with Angus & Tom, who looked after us professionally and cooked heavenly food for us all along the Track.
Fun company, varied environments, and learnt all sorts of interesting things. Plus saw takahe at 3 of the huts!

Angus and Tom from Southern Wilderness gave us an amazing holiday on the Heaphy track. We did the five day gourmet tour and we had an absolute blast. The group was small (our two couples and two others from another family). The guides were relaxed and friendly and really knowledgeable about the track and the wildlife. The food is quite unbelievable and they have an incredibly slick operation. We enjoyed the DOC huts and of course the walk itself. Loved swimming whenever we could and there is more time for this because the food is taken care of. Doing the five day trip gives you two quite relaxed days in the middle and I would definitely recommend this. This trip is worth every cent and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Thanks Angus and Tom.

The Old Ghost Road track is up there with Aotearoa’s best, and the gourmet guides put the icing on the cake - almost literally. The track is long - 85km - but the experienced guides provide well for snacks, breaks and rests. The cost is very reasonable, including transport to and from track ends, food for 5 days, 4 nights’ accommodation, and expert support from the guides. Angus and Garrett were great company, and we had lots of laughs and learning along the way.

I highly recommend walking the Heaphy Track with the Southern Wilderness crew. Our small group was lucky to walk the track in late November when the West Coast had a run of glorious weather. Not only was the track absolutely stunning, but Angus and Davo were fantastic guides and chefs over our five day journey. Because they carried the food, our packs were relatively light, which certainly made this walk more accessible for me. Their energy and good humour as they prepared the delicious meals was amazing, as was their knowledge along the track. We had a fabulous time with lots of laughs, especially during the evening card games. I’m definitely tempted to walk the Old Ghost Road with them. Thanks guys!

Angus and Dave were great company and we really enjoyed our trip on the Heaphy Track. They worked so hard, serving up the most incredible meals with very basic equipment. They were both really friendly and helpful, and I can't think of anything further they could have done.

I have just completed the Nelson Lakes Walk with a friend and we are both in our 60's.
Angus looked after us so well and it was such a treat having a guide all to ourselves!
The scenery was beautiful - lakes, mountains, rivers, an old ski field, ferns, birdlife, orchids - the list goes on.
Our food and our accomodation at the St Arnaud Alpine Lodge was bliss.
Angus prepared us gourmet platters with coffee and fresh juice for lunch, with fresh cheese scones one day!
This trip comes highly recommended to anyone who loves tramping with an edge of luxury.

Huge shout out to Angus and Tom for being fantastic hosts/guides throughout our 5 x day 4 x night Heaphy Track walk in mid Jan. Nothing was too big a deal for these guys and the meals were sensational. Some in the party had done the Milford assisted walk and the Heaphy experience with Southern Wilderness was rated far higher. As for the walk , again with Angus and Tom's help it was able to be done with few concerns. And it is a stunning walk. Knowing the swimming holes along the way and other points to note was a bonus . We will be back for one of the other walks . Thanks guys!

Just got back from a five day hike on the Heaphy Track. What a wonderful walk, this trip has it all, easy mountain ascents, stunning views, great huts, glorious high alpine downs and spectacular beaches. Our guides were knowledgeable and a whole lot of fun and the food lived up to its “gourmet” name. Can’t believe we ate prawns, fresh salmon, venison and slow cooked lamb while hiking in remote country. Loads of salad and vegetables too. Such an enjoyable walk and I would highly recommend doing it with Southern Wilderness Adventures.

5 day gourmet trek on the Heaphy Track. Most amazing scenery, superb flora and bird life. Saw the takahe, weka, tui, robin, rifleman etc. Ventured into a cave and saw the large cave weta. The guides, Elliot and Olivier could not have been nicer and more helpful. The food they prepared was generous and amazing. The huts are well maintained, with good toilet facilities. Really nice group of fellow hikers. Well done Elliot and Olivier.
