Moturoa/Rabbit Island is aptly named; the beach is about 7km long. Uncrowded, excellent facilities (changing rooms, toilets, barbeque areas, shelters, mown lawns). Accessible by road and cycleway. Massive parking areas. Safe beach, warm water in summer. Hard to beat.

I'd give this 5 stars every day if I could. Simply lovely, a short drive out of Nelson and you reach parkland and a superb beach. Great for couples, families, friends. Many walking/biking trails, picnic tables, changing facilities, excellent swimming spot. What's not to like?

It was pretty dusty while we were there and we made the mistake of going on foot. Rabbit Island really seems best enjoyed by bike, Sadly, there is a company logging part of the island. If you come from Mapua, there is one bike rental...More

Good place for hiking, cycling or swimming. Beach is long and sandy but quite greenish in colour so nothing special, but lots of parking and picnic tables even in high season. Alternatively you can access the island from Mapua. 5 min crossing is $12 return...More

Ferry over to the island with our rented bikes. Sunny day - beautiful scenery and beaches. Swam in the warm sea. Can recommend cycling.

Great beach, not very busy on morning of Jan 4. Spent a few hours on the Old Domain side. Toilets, changing area and picnic tables made for a pleasant stay. Easy to get to, you can drive here.

Had a wonderful bbq breakfast at rabbit island with their beach bbq grills and then strolled along the beach. It looked like a great place to swim as well. There were restrooms and outdoor showers as well.

Sorry, I do not know the answer to this question. I do not recall seeing people fishing, but we visited in the winter there. It was a sunny, but not warm day, and we limited ourselves to a long walk/hike on the beach. It was... More
