Imagine an amazing library of adventure books (Climbing, trekking, nautical, exploration) where you can browse and buy treasures. Brilliant place to browse and buy. Also great display, artefacts & merchandise relating to Shackleton.

One of the best things about Oamaru is that the Council has control of the Heritage District so the merchants are all local eccentrics who can afford to indulge their passion. (Other places in NZ could take their lead, instead of allowing every retail district to become a stop over for K-Mart and Countdown). This is a book shop dedicated to travellers, adventurers and Sir Edmond Hillary. There is a giant weather beaten sailboat in the front of the shop as you walk in. The owner is so laid back and bubbling with info - this isn’t just a bookshop, it’s an experience. Thoroughly enjoyed browsing - could easily have stayed all day.

I heard from other adventure book geeks that this was a jewel of a bookshop and I finally had the opportunity to browse its shelves for myself. The shop has an endless supply of mountaineering and exploration tales, some of which are rare and out of print. After chatting with the shop owner I learned that he had spent time in Antarctica and he clearly has a passion and heaps of knowledge of the subject matter. Before your adventure into the Southern Alps stop here first and find endless sources of inspiration!

I don't really use to review places that I visit, but this place deserves to be reviewed. It's such a wonderful place where you could stay a whole day. The owner is a passionate about rare adventure books and in his shop you can find whatever you want. Personally, I was impressed from what he had about Papua New Guinea. It's very difficult to find that kind of paper around and he had so much. Just go to understand. I went with my husband and 7yo daughter and she was enthusiastic!

I say one of the greatest being from Portland, home of Powell's and formerly from NY where The Strand is tops. One of the first things to notice is that the entire store's bookshelves have distinct "Aqua hue" to them. Since it specializes in Antarctica-Polar, Mountaineering; Exploration, Travel, and Nautical, Natural history, it is truly just coincidental that that genre of books has a "color scheme" of sorts. The selection of books is amazing this history more that one can fathom. Truly one of the greatest.

If you like browsing bookstores and are even remotely adventurous this is the place. Located in the heart of Oamaru's rustic waterfront in a 19th century, limestone warehouse, this world class bookstore awaits your perusal.

Just inside the door you are greeted by a scale replica of the James Caird, Shackleton's row boat which he and 5 men crossed 800 miles of open water in search of South Georgia Island in 1917. His crew suffered horribly yet saving themselves and the lives of their companions back on Elephant Island was paramount. Stories like this fill the shelves of this sun-filled store. The aforementioned boat was used in a movie and donated to the shop's owner.

I am an adventurer and have always read non-fiction. I found this shop by accident and was simply overwhelmed. There are just so many quality books, prints, maps, and other curios of the adventuring world. After spending an hour plus scanning the shelves I was headed out the door. I overheard a patron ask the proprietor, "do you have any books on aviation?" I laughed to myself recalling that I had seen entire shelves marked 'New Zealand Aviation' and "Antarctic Aviation' and so forth.

I didn't even allow myself to look through his rare book shelves. To do so would surely have brought on anxiety, impulse purchasing, and an end to my otherwise inexpensive vacation:)

We chatted with Bill Nye the owner. It seems they have regular slide shows and lectures on natural history, Antarctica, New Zealand, and beyond. This shop is a real gem. Consider yourslef lucky to have an afternoon to sink into a leather couch and soak it in.

Adventure Books are specialists in Antarctica-Polar, Mountaineering; Exploration, Travel, Nautical, Natural history. Bill Nye's bookshop has a terrific range of books, and he is very knowledgable and helpful about books in those fields. The James Caird replica in the doorway is the finest of props for adventure and Antarctic book lovers. A great place to browse, chat, acquire many great books.

From the moment you walk in to the shop the atmosphere is amazing. Bill the owner, is so knowledgeable on adventure experiences. The evening presentations Bill provides are interesting and it is a great experience to meet a lot of his guests who talk about their first hand experiences be it up mountains, over seas or rivers even the Antartic even to be able to follow up their adventures in their books! A rare find in the Oamaru Precinct worth a browse.

Thousands of exploration and adventure books and original artifacts. You can browse for hours and be amazed by the first editions, but try to buy something to help the guy stay in business !
