Well worth a stroll

Beautiful old buildings and quality local crafts combined in this must-see area of Oamaru. There are a couple of cafes as well for a coffee while you browse.

The various businesses in the precinct really work hard to make visitors feel welcome and valued. The antiques are good

Genuine local crafts in a unique setting. Lovingly restored buildings from an era when Oamaru was important.

Fun Victorian Era Stroll
Dec 2013 • Couples
It was really fun to walk around here and see all the arts and crafts on display. It was a Sunday, and most shops were open. Wandered in and out of many shops before heading to Christchurch. An easy stop off of Highway 1. We even saw some folks dressed in period clothes. Fun!

A welcome by the ladies in period costume was great, they gave us a brief rundown of the area as well as a brochure . We were able to wander around and have lunch, the best Fish & chips in all NZ. (Blue Cod )A great experience.

Worth the time to stop a night if you had not planned to and walk around this area. The shops, the artist interaction, the buildings and the history make this a fantastic place to spend an afternoon, day or morning.

Hit and Miss

We were there on a public holiday but thought given the area is promoted as a tourist area it'd all be open - about 40% was. As a local told us later Oamaru doesn't do public holidays well.
What we saw was a mix and there were a couple of shopkeepers keen to chat and talk about the area.

Some of the buildings are beautiful, especially the art gallery in Thames st along with an excellent display. Some buildings show potential. The people are super friendly...shop keepers..relaxing place to be, the 100 year old Oamaru gardens are beautiful.

Oamaru's Victorian Precinct
Apr 2013 • Family
We visited Oamaru's Victorian Precinct on a Sunday and Monday. It is filled with beautiful old buildings near the harbour which have been turned into a market area. There are beautiful arts and crafts, a theatre, Annie's Tea Rooms, cafes, souvenir/gift shops, the Criterion Hotel. We were also impressed by some wonderfully dedicated locals who dress in olden day costumes and wander around talking to visitors. It is well worth a visit.
