Michael is a master craftsman of world renoun. He is simply a leader in the field of making and restoring books the way they were made 100 plus years ago. Incredibly approachable and friendly this man shows and typifies the Oamaru spirit and class.

If you are doing the Victorian Precinct you will at some stage find yourself outside this place. If it is open, you will not regret taking a peep.

Popped in a few times about a query and possible work to be done. Like walking back in time no doubt and although lovely service by a lady who took messages have not met bookbinder yet. Not a lot to see.

Lovely small shop within antique book printing/making equipment, accompanied with smell of wooden glue and printing inks.
Make sure you chat with shop owner- you will learn a lot about book printing.

It was a pleasure to finally meet Michael (he hand-made our wedding album almost two decades ago!) Stepping into Michael's bookbinding workshop is like stepping back in time. Traditional craftsman, in a historic part of town (part of the renaissance of that area). Handmade books for purchase, or order a commission. If you're keen on learning the craft yourself, check out the bookbinding classes Michael runs periodically. Highly recommended to those who love books and appreciate true craftsmanship. (NB. My visit was in June 2014, however Trip Advisor didn't enable that option!)

We were walking around the Oamaru Victorian precinct when we passed the bookbinder. He was working away and we went in to observe for a few minutes. He was working on a commissioned book with leather tooled covered boards and silk sewn edges to the binding - a time consuming work of art highlighting a true craftsman. Passionate about his work he took the time to show samples and details of this work in progress. There were some beautifully bound note books for sale that would make a special gift for a person who enjoyed books and crafted paper.

Michael is wonderful - we need more of his type. He's passionate about his craft, the preservation of the precinct, and a great raconteur to boot. A treat to visit his shop and chat.

Were just walking around in Oamaru when we came across the Bookbinder. I am so glad we went in, met up and watched. Michael stories were funny and work was great. Just being in the place were you could see them work and see the final outcomes all around was great. Seemed pretty passionate about what he did and keeping the tradition alive. He also had a few comments on the change in architecture post Christchurch earthquake which I found quite interesting.
