About
Author Janet Frame lived at 56 Eden Street from the age of six until she left Oamaru after completing secondary school. Her childhood became one of the best known of any New Zealander after she wrote of its joys and sorrows in her bestselling autobiography, which was immortalised in the celebrated film An Angel at my Table. The key rooms are very much as they looked during the Frame residency. The dining room (with its original lino) and the bedrooms have not changed since those days. The house is not a restoration, it has become what is now called a re-framing, a combination of known facts and recollections. In many ways, the house is as the first lines in To the Is-Land '.. with its mixture of facts and memories of truths'. The Janet Frame Eden Street Trust owns and administers the property at 56 Eden Street, Oamaru. Opening Hours 2.00 - 4.00pm daily during the summer (1st November to 30 April).

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I visited Janet Frame's house on 18 January 2023. It is open from 2 - 4pm daily. It is a wonderful experience to step into Janet's childhood home and learn more about one of NZ's most talented people. The gardens are amazing too. Well worth a visit.

Stopped in to have a look - expected something like a museum but it was really a house that could well have been lived in that day. Nice and natural with a number of items that we remembered from our own childhood. Loved the toilet with the torn up newspapers for use - well remember that. Overall very interesting and not a stuffy museum exhibition. The guide had a fund of stories and was worth listening to. Recommend

As you travel up Eden Street you come across this ordinary house with a photo and board. It is Janet Frame’s House. It only opens for a couple hours a day and we couldn’t go then. If she is one of your favourite writers then this is a must!

I agree that this is a must for those who love Janet Frame's writing and are fascinated, as I am, by the autobiographical nature of it. It might not be interesting those who are not interested in her work and life, so go on your own if you have to, as I did, and immerse yourself in her home. It's a poignant illustration of the time of her formative life...

Alas I was a week too early as the house wasn't open but I could peer through the windows! It has been furnished in 1930's style and it looks as though Janet had just stepped out for a few moments! I would have loved to go inside.

I've been here once and loved seeing where Janet Frame and her family lived. It's well preserved and staff are friendly. If you have time head over to the cemetery to see where Janet Frame is buried.

A restful and reflective visit, lovely to listen to Janet Frames voice while sitting in the room with the lino on the floor that she had remembered and spoken about. Great to see recognition of this aspect of our culture and a wonderful place for us to access something of the person. Sensitively and quietly done, thank you

The house is lovely and in good condition, although I beleive a lot of things were left from the previous owners. Not worth it, stories made up to make it seem interesting, but are completley unfactual and false. It would be wise for the trust to check their facts before selling it to the public, although this may have changed since I have visited.

The Janet Frame house has been very carefully ‘re-framed’. Janet Frame herself (both in person when she visited the property and through reading her autobiography) provided advice as did members of her family. The intention is to engender the spirit of the home as it was during Janet Frame's residence there is the 1930s and 1940s.
