Need binoculars or a keen sense of sight and lots of patience to spot the penguins!

We arrived at the viewing point at 7pm in end Jan (summer) and saw the first penguin come to shore... read more

Went looking for yellow-eyed penguins at sunset. Didn't find any, but still had a lovely walk along the cliffside.

We arrived at the viewing point at 7pm in end Jan (summer) and saw the first penguin come to shore at around 715pm. Stayed for 1.5 hours and saw 4 penguins in total and 5 or more seals. Binoculars highly recommended as the penguins are...More

A little visited spot of at least the time I have been there is in not crowded. A hide provided by DOC enables a shelter viewing area of the beach. Yelloweyed Penguins and Fur Seals can be see.

Agree that beach is closed due to hatched chicks. Only 6 breeding pairs therefore lowers the adults to be seen coming back to nest. 3 seals slumped on the beach. Crowd of 50-60 over the hour we were there. No sightings nice view.

We reached at around 7pm in summer and was still bright. View was nice as of any other beach. However we went their to test our luck to see yellow eyed 🐧 penguin. But couldn’t see any. Will try next time, cheers, well maintained place.

Maybe its not the peak season? Doesnt quite worth it after two hrs wait. Its quite cold in mid Sep here so prepare gloves and hat for the wait.

We have been before but this time the access trail down to the beach was closed because of small slips after heavy rain. Wecould still look down from above on this sunny morning and see seals asleep on this lovely small beach.

While touring the South Island we stopped here as our friends knew about this spot. Lovely area and well kept walkways. No penguin's though and just one lonely seal, we did stay for some time, but hay-ho no go.

Have been here quite a bit has live close to it. Penguins require patience to see and are about at dawn and dusk. Unfortunately due to height on cliff of viewing platforms average child or adult without binoculars does not get that good an experience.

We arrived at 4:00 as suggested and waited for about 45 minutes. In that time two penguins arrived on the beach - some distance from the viewing area. We were later told that we were lucky to see two as they are very rare and...More
