Bushy beach is a quiet beach along Oamaru coast, where you are likely to see yellow eyed penguins. Differently from the little blue penguins, yellow eyed are very shy, they don't like to see or hear humans. The beach is visible from high above, bringing a pair of binoculars and/or camera zooms is a very good idea! We were lucky... More

The walk down to the beach is through pretty foliage and flowers, depending on the season. Quite a steep walk down but worth the effort. Read the signage before you descend as at certain times you are not allowed on the beach due to the penguin activity. The beach has lovely rocks and stones and shallow areas to look for... More

Saw one penguin and five seals on the beach from a perch up above. Not a lot of action on the beach as seals and penguins are sleeping. Definitely need binoculars and telephoto lenses and a good wind breaking shell. Path is well laid out. No restrooms. One can go down to the beach before 3 pm but not when... More

Want to view selfish, illiterate wildlife on the beach? Then this is the place for you! See the not-so-rare human walking on the beach, ignoring the "beach closed after 3pm" signs. Been waiting patiently for an hour and finally managed to see 2 penguins? Never fear, they will be scared away by a clueless idiot! Ever wanted to see all... More

Went there around 2pm but no penguins. Lot of seals tho and found beautiful sea shells. After 3pm went up on the viewing platform and waited til 4pm but still no penguins. Walk past viewing point and follow small path down to the rocks and you will find even more seals! Please respect the guidelines and don't enter the beach... More

After a wonderful visit to the blue penguin colony, we decided to wake up before sunrise to see if we could spot any yellow-eyed penguins heading out to sea. Despite the blustery winds and nearly freezing temperatures, we witnessed one of the most spectacular sunrises I've ever seen, while being the only people located on the beach. Although we only... Our B&B hosts at Oamaru Creek told us how to get there and it was just a few minutes up the road to a bay and then a short walk down a track and there there were! Yellow-eyed penguins in the wild, standing on the beach. A wonderful wildlife experience.
