Well organised and just good old fashioned fun! Beautiful views as you are driven around the harbour. A must do with the children.

We spent quite a while admiring the station from the level crossing opposite the Steampunk HQ. It is very beautiful and nicely kept.

We were lucky enough to see the steam train going. They had a problem with it and were moving the train onto another line. The staff very helpful in allowing us inside the workshop for photos.

Decided to take a ride on the steam train on a lovely summer's day.
The ticket collector warned that there may be sparks during the ride up to the port but not thinking much of it we sat in the open carriage.
When the train set off everyone was completely drenched in wet ash, this included my family and the people near us who were not happy as they were dresses to go out for a meal and were covered in spots of ash.
The remainder of the ride was ok, pretty but maybe 5 minutes then a stop at the warf then back again.
The ash has not come out of our clothes which were new from overseas Christmas presents and are now ruined and my handbag is also ruined.
I appreciate that it's a steam train but when only warned about potential sparks no one in the carriage expected to be covered in ash and have their clothing ruined.

Thank you for notifying us about this unfortunate experience. We sincerely apologise for the upsetting incident. Our volunteer crew members strive to inform passengers in the open wagon about the risk of soot and cinders landing on light colored clothing, even though the majority of our train trips finish without incident. You can appreciate why passengers dressed in dark clothing in the old days when traveling on a steam train! Our volunteers have discovered that Vanish Napisan works best to remove soot stains from light colored clothing. Please note it can take several washes to thoroughly eliminate the stains. Also, the Vanish website contains additional helpful tips. We hope your report will serve to inform future passengers of the possible risks to fine clothing when riding behind a steam train. Best Regards, John D.

not a bad deal, NZD10 per person for a 20mins train ride through the victorian precinct of Oamaru and along the coast line when it stops for several minutes before returning journey. the train itself is classic and the veteran train staff onboard is equally friendly and vivacious! they know their job definitely... highly recommended!

Short ride on old train, approx. only 15 minutes trip one way, but reminding how in the past this train was part of the daily busy life at Oamaru. This short track connects only two stations, Harbourside and Quarry Siding. Fun for the whole family, specially children love to ride on the open wagon, see unobstructed views along the way. At the end stop, passengers allowed to stretch their legs by walking to Blue Penguin Colony or just enjoy the surrounding scenery of Oamaru harbour. Return ticket valid for the whole day, free to choose the trip back to the starting point (except for the last trip). For the normal weekends, the train pulled by diesel engine, on the special day steam engine used for the trips.

Took the train during the Victorian Fete and had a hilariously wonderful time. The conductor was most entertaining and definitely my favourite part of the adventure.
