My husband and I went up in a flight with one of the pilots (just the three of us in the 4-seater plane) and after the 30 minute flight we didn't see any whales. We were incredibly disappointed, however, once we got back, they said...More

Because of strong winds we weren't able to take a boat tour as planned, so we switched to wings over whales. The view we had was stunning, clear blue sky and white mountain tops. Ah, and the whale as well!

Excellent choice! We had an appointment, we went and the guy told us that our chances of spoting a whale that day were low, so we left it for the next day. Today we made it and it was great! We saw a sperm whale...More

Kaikoura had not been nice to us. First, our whalewatch booking was cancelled by rain and wind. It was rescheduled for the end of the holiday, along with this. That day, it rained, heavily. Both cancelled, arrgh! But we knew this would be short, and...More

If you are not looking forward to the boats because of potential sea sickness: this is it! Seems the operators work together so before you depart the pilot gets the coordinates & diving time of the spotted whale from the boats: likelihood of spotting greatly...More

It's true what they say, there is more to a whale then the tail shot and this experience lets you see the entire whale! I have been whale watching in boats before and not sure if I would ever go back after this experience. You...More

Having been pretty reliably informed that a blue whale was haning around just off-shore from Kaikoura, we dashed out to the airfield to get on the very next Wings Over Whales trip that we could do. These whales are not the resident sperm whales that...More

We arrived at the place ahead of time, and were warmly greeted. First we were shown a video about the whales. My heart often sinks as these videos are rarely fun, but this one actually explained how to spot the whales and why they were...More

Thirty minutes on the plane cost as much as the whale watch boat trip. Since we were already doing the albatross trip in the morning and I know that the whale watch trip is often cancelled in the winter, especially in the afternoon we decided...More

Boat gives you a closer encounter, but plane lets you see more area and greater chance of seeing whales and dolphins. I would base my decision on the time of season I was visiting.
