Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

After 2 other boats were full we managed to get on The Rodfather, fishing charter. We were so luck as we were the only ones. The boat was super equipped with 4 rods, each with electric reels, so much quicker than the other boats, which only had manual ones. It was a wonderful trip and far exceeded our expectations. Steve, the owner was so friendly and knowledgeable, pointing out all the different wildlife and we even got to see Royal Albatrosses really close to the boat. Leaving the boat we each had a crayfish and a bag of filleted fish, which was delicious. All in all it was an amazing trip and we have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone. Will definitely be going again.

We want to give Steve a shout out, for the great fishing and experience we had. We've been with Steve twice now, (and we're planning our next trip!)
You feel safe with Steve, you're in the hands of an expert.
His fishing rods are the BEST, electric reels are so easy to use. And you need them for all the fish you will catch!
So interesting, my favourite from yesterday's trip was a pair of Albatross who only had eyes for each other. So cute.
Go out with Steve, don't even look at anyone else.

The best fishing charter I have ever done, without a doubt. Super awesome skipper Steve has expert local knowledge, and certainly knows how to catch fish! We caught heaps of Blue Cod and Perch, but also an amazing Ling, two Blue Nose, and even a Hoki! Took home a mountain of fish and a crayfish to boot! Fantastic value for money, even saw some Orca while out. Thanks Steve!!

Highly rated fishing charter with Steve - friendly, knowledgeable and patient!! We all left with some lovely fillets, crays and just as important memories of time well spent. Thanks Steve. Nick.

There are a number of fishing charters in Kaikoura. I would suggest that you don't use this charter. We recently went out with Rod Fathers and also another charter boat. Glad we booked with more than one to be on the safe side. Rod Father has bad time management with no regard to anyone else. The choice of fishing spot's was not ideal for the region we were in. They take what you catch and cut it up before you can get a photo and then split what you catch with others ????? When we got home we found that they had given us the crap fish caught and not the fish we had caught. That is why is all sliced up and put in carry bags, all done too quick for you to question anything. Fishing should be fun but this clearly left a bad taste.

Just been out on the boat with my little sis. Awsome fun! Realy enjoyed using the electric reels thought they would be a cheat! But just makes it a bit easier on your arms when you are pulling 200m upwards lol. Skipper was great and we had the boat all to ourselves. All in all well worth the money. Anyone going out, I would recommend getting some sea sick tablets as it was a bit choppy. Great funSimon and holly waite

Boat was a bit cramped for the number of people. Fishing wasn’t that great due to the sea conditions.

We had an absolutely fantastic day with Steve. We were keen to get our elderly Father out on the water and Steve was very accommodating, going out of his way to make the day perfect. Our group also included children and Steve was very patient and passed on lots of knowledge to them. The level of safety on his vessel was impeccable. We caught lots of fish, the electric rods made the job quick and easy. We were also lucky enough to have close encounters with albatross, seals and dolphins.
We were also thrilled to gather a few crayfish at the end of our trip. I honestly cannot recommend Steve's charter enough, we are already planning our next trip. Definitely the best charter in Kaikoura!

Perfect day fishing. Caught lots of fish and crayfish, saw dolphins and albatrosses, amazing scenery, safe and knowledgable skipper Steve. Electric reels on the rods so fished in water up to 100m deep. Highly recommended.
