Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

As far as the theatre was concerned it was top notch and the staff member was interactive. For both of these I would have given an 'excellent' review. The movie was excellent too BUT the volume was ridiculously loud. Within 1 minute I sounded my disapproval to staff who in all fairness was not prepared to adjust the settings. I waited until the trailers were over in the hope the film itself had less volume. It did but it was still far too loud. Twenty four hours later my ears are still suffering. No way should anyone be subject to this torture. If theatres want business then they need to consider their customers and not blindly follow the settings. Yes, I should have demanded my money back after the first minute. In future I will and I ask others to do the same. Then we can enjoy the films we enjoy with the appropriate level of sound. Personally I think a 50% discount would have been appropriate. This experience spoiled an afternoon outing with my wife who likewise suffered from the sound.

What a treasure! Newly renovated with the oldie worldy feel. Pleasant young staff at the ticket booth and a very clean, new theatre with comfortable seats, a great screen and fabulous sound. We came across this by chance and loved our movie experience, leaving us wishing there were more theatres like this in our region

This theatre, built in the art deco style, opened it's doors 21 Dec 1934. Until 2016, it was one of the best examples of the old theatres, using the old style projectors and needing you to bring a blanket to snuggle under to keep warm while watching a movie in the winter! It was popular with locals and visitors alike, but on 14 Nov 2016, a mag 7.8 eathquake hit Kaikoura, damaging the theatre (and devastating the surrounding area).

The GOOD news is that the façade was undamaged and building of a new, modern theatre to sit behind the façade is due to start in May 2019, with the fitout scheduled for 2020. It should be completed in late 2020 in time to mark 50 years of community ownership of the Art Deco theatre.

So, travellers who had visited prior to 2016 and are planning a return trip, and those planning to be here in/after 2020, add the theatre to you list of things to see in Kaikoura!

Wanted to inform you all that it is closed. There was a big fence around the movie theatre and the last movie that seemed to have been playing was the storks. I don't know when it will reopen.

I didn't go because they are not showing the movie I wanted to see and don't intend to either in spite of it being one of the biggest anticipated movies this year. And I didn't like their attitude when I asked about it either.

My husband and I went to the Mayfair one Friday evening during a short stay in Kaikoura - we were worried it might be quite busy as went to see a new film just after its release but we were pleasantly surprised that the cinema still had lots of seats. It is well maintained and we really enjoyed our visit - it is a locally run cinema and we were made to feel very welcome. Also the cinema has recently undergone a digital upgrade so no longer has intervals partway through the films. Ticket prices are in line wth other cinemas in New Zealand so very reasonable.

I stumbled on this place on my way down to the peninsula walkway and was pleasantly surprised to be welcomed by friendly staff. I booked my ticket there and then and returned several hours later to see Deadpool. This made for a fantastic end to my day and the walk back to my accommodation along the beach in the moonlight just topped it all off.

I went to the cinema two times during my stay in Kaikoura.
I really liked the film selection, pretty much up to date. Normally priced cinema tickets (15 dollars, or on cincema day 12 dollars)
It's small but really cosy. I really liked the whole flair of it.

This was a delightful find along the seafront road toward the southern end of town.
It has a good-sized screen, the seats are pretty comfortable and the pre-film commercials were mercifully short. Entrance fees and ice cream prices were very reasonable.
This institution deserves the support of locals and visitors alike.

Good selection of films, and clear preview by enthusiastic staff. A great way to spend a windy evening in Kaikoura
