Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Thanks to Tomo and Rob. They both worked incredibly hard to make sure all the guests had a good time. Baiting up, untangling lines, cleaning the fish etc all made sure maximum time was spent fishing. The crayfishing experience on the return was really impressive. The occy, albatross and dolphins were just a bonus. These two guys could definitely get a berth on the world’s deadliest catch. We’ve enjoyed fish and cray for the last two nights. Thanks again and enjoy your off season. Cheers, Gaye and Brian, Perth WA.

The fishing trip was part of a work team-building day and was an outstanding experience. The whole team had a brilliant day and it was so easy to organise and do. We’d definitely do it again and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this as a great day out.

While the crew exhibited commendable professionalism and service, several issues marred what could have been an enjoyable outing.

Firstly, the promise of abundant seafood fell short as there was a limited selection of fish and no crayfish available. Additionally, a misunderstanding regarding the booking of an extra family member remained unresolved, resulting in an unauthorised charge on our credit card after the trip. This lack of clarity and communication was disappointing and tarnished our experience.

I'm sorry to hear your trip didn't met your expectations. I would like to clarify a few things though. There is never a promise of abundant seafood at any point in the sale of any of our trips. It is illegal for us to guarantee anything regarding seafood by NZ law. We always say on these trips that we are going to go out and target Bluecod, Seaperch and Crayfish, but we would obviously have to wait and see what comes up on the day. Secondly, you booked for 4 people and turned up with 3 people! You gave no prior notice that your 4th person was not coming. You seemed very disgruntled when I told you there would be a charge for that, We do have a 48 hour cancellation policy in place, all clearly stated in your booking when you made it. All the follow up and reminder emails clearly stated you were booked in for 4 people also. To remedy and calm the situation I offered a heavily discounted charge to which you agreed and proceeded to charge the card you had made the booking with. So I do not believe it was unresolved, as when I offered that rate you said that that was okay. I'm sorry if all of the written and verbal messages were not clear and concise enough for you, thanks Kaikoura Fishing Tours

A great day out, and we were blessed with sunny weather. The booking was easy, check-in very friendly when we arrived, and the crew on board were hands on, very helpful and knowledgeable. We came away feeling great about catching so much fish! Dolphins and albatross thrown in close up, it could not have been a better day! Very impressed, too, with the integrity of sharing the crayfish.

Overall it was a very dissapointing fishing charter. Firstly there were too many people fishing at any given time as we picked up 6 xtra people which just overloaded the charter. We had no Idea or had any prior warning that this would happen. Boat could do with a bit of a tidy up. Fishing was very poor with very little Cod landed. Expected more from this experienced charter operator. We weren't happy sharing the catch with Xtra people but I guess that's just the way it is. We will next time, if we go out with this operator again, charter the boat for us only. We will look very closely at a charter here in the future. Very disappointed.

I'm sorry this trip didn't meet your expectations. We are surveyed for upto 18 passengers plus crew and we can fish upto 12 people at a time, so unless you book a private hire then generally most of our trips are made up of mixed groups.. The other 6 'extra ' people would have been people booked on the trip just the same as you were and paying the same amount so any catch is shared out equally with whomever has fished and paid to do so. If you re wanting a boat to yourselves and not fishing with other people , then yes, private hire is the way to go! Thanks Kaikoura Fishing Tours

An awesome experience.
This was our 2nd trip with Kaikoura Fishing Tours. And we highly recommend them.
Professional and friendly.
Well organized.
Rods are set up and baited. Caught fish removed and rod re-baited for you every time. Fish is filleted for you.
All crayfish brought on board is measured twice.
A fabulous way to spend some time fishing in Kaikoura and return home with fresh blue cod and Hapuku fillets and crayfish.

First time with this Charter Operator and proved to be very good. Not much if any Blue Cod was caught but thats just the way it is on the day. Skipper was extremely helpful as was the deck hand who also was very good. Only downside was that there was too many people fishing at any one time as lines were getting tangled frequently. Might be a good idea to control this a bit better otherwise , all good.

Thanks for the feedback and the understanding that fishing, is fishing somedays. Thats why we call it fishing and not catching! Thanks again Anita and Tomo

As a previous owner/skipper of my own Charter Fishing business, I congratulate Kaikoura Fishing Tours for doing a great job. The skipper Tommo and deckhand Rob did a stellar job.Our group consisted of my party of five plus two other tourist couples and one other. Some of the tourist were lacking a bit of skill but Rob the deckhand was on it. We caught a wide variety of fish, including some massive big Blue Cod. We helped load some bait in craypots and even had some crayfish to take home. I highly recommend Kaikoura Fishing Tours.

Mmm. This was a short trip. We seemed to spend quite some time checking the cray pots & not as much time fishing as I would have liked. Limited catch on the day we went, mostly small sea perch. My partner was the only one to catch blue cod, though to be fair, she did get the option to keep all her catch. It seemed we had one drift across a spot X on the drogue & that was it. Maybe we just chose the wrong format. The skipper & mate were great but with ten first timers aboard, it wasn't quite what I was hoping for. Will deffo go again, choose a different format & hope for better.

Thank you for sharing your experience on here, I'm sorry it wasn't what you were after on the day. I think you may have chosen our shortest trip (maybe the 2 hour trip which is generally best suited for beginners/children or those travelling ) It is advertised as a short trip with generally enough time to go out catch a feed, see the sights and do the craypots. If you're an experienced fisherman and wanting to go out and bring a bit back for the freezer, then I would recommend the 4 or 5 hour trip next time Thanks Anita and Tomo

Our family of 7 ( 2 adults, 2 teens and 3 children) all went out with Kaikoura Fishing Tours on Saturday the 24th of Feb. We booked a 3 hour charter and joined the tour with 10 others on the vessel for the tour. We were warmly welcomed and felt totally supported and looked after for the duration of the trip. Tomo and his crew ( both on shore and off) clearly have their operation polished and are enthusiastic about providing everyone onboard as comfortable and enjoyable an experience as possible. We were able to catch large numbers of fish, and some sharks in addition to getting some crays up in the pots. We had great weather and took home some blue cod, tarakihi, orange fish and crays to feast upon. We thoroughly enjoyed our first family fishing on the ocean adventure and would highly recommend them to anyone. Thanks Tomo, Anita and crew - our kids had the best time and havent stopped talking about it = Kent and Sii Johnston
