Definately worth doing

An easy & very interesting 3 to 4 hour return walk just south of Hokitika. The trail follows an old logging logging tramway with good information boards along the way. You will walk through some beautiful old growth forest & some regenerating forest as well as some trees that are left from experimental introduced forests. There is also a boardwalk that goes through the middle of a wetland with lots of bird life. There is a 30 minute side track to a secluded little spot on Lake Mahinapua called picnic point. Really worth coming out to do this walk, not another walker on the trail when we were there, just be aware of cyclists who use the track. Most cyclists are courteous, however there were a couple who had no respect for other track users. A great half day out.

Easy scenic walk

Through native forest, from main road through to back of the lake, following old trainline, so easy gradient and flat, with side track to lake edge

Good easy 4 hour walk
Mar 2017 • Couples
After a long drive up from Franz Joseph this was an ideal way of shaking off the journey.
The walk follows the old railway line built to haul timber from the bush to the sawmill, as a result it's fairly flat so accesible on foot or bike and possibly wheelchair but please check first.
There is a raised wooden walkway through the swamp which is interesting, as are the signposts telling the history of the area and the trains. Just before the end you can turn off to the lake, where we had a late picnic lunch, but this is a tougher track and not for anybody unsteady on their feet
It says 4 hours return and we did it in 3 1/2 with a stop for lunch.

Nice walk on westside of the lake

Nice flat walk through wetlands with nice forest and occasional views of the lake. One short track goes to lake edge with good views. Often see White Herons here. Relics of mining visible. Is dual use walk and mountain bike trail. Not too interesting for riding, scenic though. Part of Westland Wilderness trail

Good walk in pristine forest
Feb 2016 • Couples
A DOC walkway that mixes natural forest and swampland with indicative information on previous use of the land by timber felling and tramline workers. Please be aware that the track is shared by cyclists and when you meet these on the boardwalk sections great care is needed by all concerned!
The extra walk to the picnic spot on the lakeside is really worthwhile, but is a little more energetic than the rest of the track and requires good footwear as it gets slippery and wet in places.
