Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I have purchased 2 pieces of jade from this lovely shop. They have a huge range of beautiful jade, and they were very helpful in getting the pieces I wanted. The couriering of the pieces were super fast. Very good service and so helpful. I would definitely recommend going there to find your piece of jade.

I shopped around to probably 10+ shops in Hokitika looking for jade pieces with my partner. We went in every shop, and really took our time and looked at every piece (total about 3 hours just doing this). After going through every place we ended up going back to Traditional Jade - they had the best selection, in our opinion. It's a small shop and a bit down the road from the others but there are SO many beautiful and unique pieces in the cases. Most other shops had about 4 pieces in a row on each level of their shelves, whereas Traditional Jade has about 10+ pieces across. So it's a bit overwhelming at first,so much to look at, but it's great that they can fit in so many great pieces!
I ended up finding a design that I absolutely loved, but it was in dark solid green color, and I was looking for a flower jade (ie brown/light green faded/speckled). I spoke with Caroline (the worker there) and she said it was no problem for her father (the carver) to make me a custom piece of the design I like in the stone color I wanted! I couldn't believe this! And it was at no extra cost at all, just the shipping cost ($10) to ship it to me in Christchurch.
4 Days later she sent me an imagine of my completed piece and said there was still no obligation to buy it if I had changed my mind. Of course though, I loved it, and she mailed it out to Christchurch and I got it the next day in the mail.
Absolutely beautiful jade pieces! Traditional, unique, beautiful designs, and custom work if you request it at no extra cost! Very nice/friendly family as well :)
Thanks!

If you are visiting Hokitika to buy green stone carvings, visit the Traditional Jade Co at the end of Tancred St. It's a family business that sells beautiful pieces at really competitive prices. We came across this store after looking through all the main street tourist shops and found exactly what we were looking for. Their carvings are made on site. Great quality and service.

We tripped across this place by accident and I'm very happy we did. Traditional Jade Co is a small family run business - everyone collects the greenstone, Dad carves, Mum and the daughters run the shop. The pieces are beautiful, each unique. I found them to be very well priced considering they locally made. The service was very personable, the lady that served us (I'm kicking myself that I didn't get her name, but she is one of the daughters) explained to us what each of the designs meant and helped us to look at the pieces we were interested in. There is no pushy sales here, they appreciate that this is a personal buying experience.
If you're looking for greenstone in Hokitika, this is the place to go!

Located off the main drag, small family run business with good quality made NZ pounamu and not tourist loaded pricing. We were lucky to find this shop as we wandered the streets of Hokitika. Lovely staff.

This place had well designed and impeccably made jade. We went there first and after visiting other stores we went back and bought two pieces. The prices were very reasonable. The owner was wonderful and so very helpful.

Great shop with lots to choose from. The former owner and stone cutter was in the shop with the current owner (hist daughter) and were very friendly and approachable. They helped me identify a piece of Tangiwai that I had purchased in Queenstown, at which point I came back and purchased a incredible pendent and my wife purchased some earrings as gifts for family and friends. Unquestionably the best workmanship and lapidary skills for the price I saw while visiting NZ. The double spiral pendent piece I picked up was basically a wholesale price at 1/3 the cost it would of been at a high end jade shop in Queenstown. On top of that the shop is a family run business with a father and two daughters. I highly recommend this shop to anyone looking for high end jade work.
