The beach at Hokitika is long. It has a lot of drift wood, some of it has been shaped into interesting art. There are currents in the sea, so you need to be aware of this if you swim, surf. There were Hector's dolphins in the sea when we were there, this was fantastic as they are a rare species.

This beach is wonderful to sit and watch the Tasman Sea, but is not for sunbathing on.
The town is famous for its Jade works and local artists. As such the seating and signage are all beautiful.
There is a large Driftwood sign spelling the name of the town.

Great beach to visit to see the creative driftwood art on display. Don’t miss the Hokitika sign. However the big rock sea wall meant that we could not find any easy and safe way down on to the beach itself. There is a pleasant heritage walk above the beach that starts along the river, goes to the river mouth and then round along the front of the main township.

Lovely for a stroll. The driftwood sign is a fun quick stop, especially with sunset. We caught rainy days in Nov 2023. Thankfully the sky cleared up enough for a sunset through the clouds. There is a wide paved walking path. A bit of rocks you could scramble over to walk along the rocky shore. Parking was easy. A good bit available in pull in spots along the main stretch of beach, along with parking within the nearby blocks. It was nice to drive right over and park facing the ocean on a cold, windy day. We went out for small bits and also enjoyed sitting and watching the ocean from the car.

When in Hokitika it's a simple task to head up one of the many walkways out onto the beach. Windswept, and at times quite rough, it's stark and spectacular. Driftwood by the ton, and matching driftwood artwork at times, it has a treacherous history but is a perfect spot to eat your fish n chips (seagulls and sandflies excepted!).

Interesting drift wood art, lovely walking seats to sit with a glass of wine while you watch the sunset. And right in town too! Hokitika is a cool little town with so much to do and see in the area. It's very under-rated and deserves a visit as does all of the West Coast

We walked along the beach from our motel north of town, around Sunset Point, and then back to town for dinner. After dinner we followed other people down an alleyway back to he beach to watch the sunset. Absolutely stunning on a sunny evening.

Whether it’s sunny, rainy or windy, Hokitika Beach is beautiful. Such an amazing stretch of ever changing rugged West Coast coastline, always good for a wander to search for shells, have a chat to one of the whitebaiters or just to sit on one of the drift wood logs lining the foreshore and take in the salt air and spectacular views to the sea or the mountains. Sunset on a sunny evening is simply perfect. We ❤️ visiting Hokitika!

This is a very exposed beach, which means it is not particularly pleasant when it is windy. But on one of our evenings in Hokitika there was no wind at all and we experienced a lovely evening on the beach close to the hotel.
An amazing amount of driftwood of all shapes and sizes collects here.
It is a nice place for a walk if you have a pleasant day.
