Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Best café in Hoki. Seriously.
We were looking for a café in Hokitika and this looked like the best one and were surprised that this was the one that looked the best and it was in the local movie theatre!
The food all looked lovely and fresh and it was so hard to choose.
We had the most delicious soft and fluffy scone. It was just glorious.
The service was so friendly and kind, very fast and efficient.
Highly recommend and will return here first next time we visit.

We stop over at Hokitika’s town for shopping & lunch.
Most restaurants were packed.
We found this nice café in Regent Theatre.
The pies were seemingly great and the coffee smells great.
We tried the freshly bake pies and coffee.
It’s a wonderful meal with friendly services.
This place is not far from the beach
Must try!

We visited the cinema on a wet evening in Hokitika, which is quite a common event. The staff were very friendly and the cinema was huge. They had a reasonable number of good films showing for a small town.

We had passed this coffee shop a few days earlier noting it's lively atmosphere. When we returned in the pouring rain we happily drank good coffee and freshly made scone and muffin, with free wifi. Definitely the right choice.

It was lovely watching "Oddball" in this grand old theatre. It seats 400, giving you an idea of how busy this town once was. The movie was brilliant- very amusing for both adults and children.

When it rains on the West coast of the South Island of New Zealand, it really really rains, and there's not a lot to do.... So we went to the cinema, and found that we had entered a world of local community who had fought to stop their pretty art deco building being demolished, had acquired the building and were now fully refurbishing it using volunteer labour. Hokitika's a small town, and the locals we spoke to said they needed eleven seats per performance to keep the cinema going - the projectionist also sold the ice creams. Do go!

We didn't get to watch a movie but passing through Hokitika Winter 2018 decided on pies for lunch... OMG , these were the freshest and best tasting pies we have ever had and we've tied many.

this art nouveau theatre is a oneman cinema operation,he will sell you your ticket, sell you sweets & ices, make your popcorn & run the film. there is a note on the frontdoors saying that if you wish to get into the cinema while the film is showing call a mobile number. I loved this cinema it was great there was only 20 to 30 people in it. this is a real small town gem. you must visit.

I'd read a review saying the countrys best pies could be found here and so had to test that claim. They didnt have too many left cause theyre obviously sought after. I had a very fine mince pie with a yummy rich pastry. Meaty and fresh. Not overloaded with flavours but definitely high on my ranking. Had an even richer strawberry and chocolate tart which couple with a good strong coffee was hard to beat. A complete meal with all the important food groups ticked. Nice outdoor seating and great place to people watch. Friendly staff. Highly recommended.

Thanks for the feedback Richard - great to hear that you had a good pie & tart experience in Hokitika. Next time you come back you'll have to include a movie into the mix. Safe travels.

I had bad luck with the weather for two days. So I explored the town and I was recommended to go there - a truly lovely place: hand made food (even during day in the absoluty open kitchen) which tastes great (they know what they are doing and how to handle herbs/spices) and a friendly team which also work together really good.
Altogether a great combination which should definitely also be in the category breakfast/food

GR thanks for your review. We had been open for a total of 4 days and still remeber your visit to the cafe! Shame the weather didn't let you do a bit more round Hokitika than drink coffe. Hope your trip further south provided a little more adventrure.
Thank you,
Regent Cafe Team

You listing was as a theatre. You should really try to get the cafe listed separately. Honestly I tried hard to find you looking for food, and even to give you a great review. I don’t know how you go about getting this changed but if Trip Advisor had you on the top of the list, we would have walked straight in 2 hours earlier as we parked right out the front of your shop but we wandered the shops to see the cafe names that had come up on the list.

Thanks for the feedback. I have added several search phrases to the TripAdvisor listing - but perhaps they're not working that well. Will have a play with our profile and try and boost the cafe component of the business Thanks again.
