Walked up the road from the town at about 10.15pm. we then entered the path to the glow worms -it was a very beautiful experience with many glow worms all around. It was surprisingly good, intact one of my favourite attractions to date in NZ. I liked the low key approach, and the natural beauty of it all. Just remember, no bright lights, and then your phone down to low screen brightness before entering. This is well worth the short walk to the Dell.

We arrived Hokitika around evening, after having dinner, it still rained. We just took our chance to visit the Glow Worm Dell which was about 1 km from our place. Upon arrival, we saw two girls come out, I asked her about the situation and she replied wonderful. We were excited and brought our umbrella going out, within two minutes, we saw the wonderful scenery where those worm were stationed under the bushes with their lovely blue color. What an amazing moment we encountered during a rainy night. We were satisfied and going back with joy. Due to darkness, no picture could be taken, for your eye only!

The dell is a very short easy walk. We went at 9.30pm and there were a few visible but by 10.15pm, we could see heaps. They were lovely to look at. Don’t walk up with a torch, you’ll ruin the experience for those around you. And no flash photography!

At dusk we strolled up to ‘the dell’ to see the glow worms. It took a while for my eyes to adjust to the dark and then I began to see pockets of where the glow worms were.
It is well worth taking the time to see this if you are in the Hokitika area.....

Went at dusk as quite dark in the dell even at that time of day. Little blue lights glowing on the walls once your eyes adjust. Amazing what some bugs can do. Please don't use flash on cameras/phones, as it blinds the little worms and everyone else trying to view them. Take a torch/phone to see pathway as it's a short, gravel, uphill walk. Fenced both sides for safety. There's also a narrow side path that takes you up to the lighthouse at top of hill. I went back mid morning just to see what the dell looks like in daylight. All the ferns, moss and trees and a little trickle of water down one side. Would be a very cool area on a hot summers day. Worth a look day and night at least once while visiting Hokitika.

We didn't know about this before coming to Hokitika but thought it was absolutely worth it. There are lots of glow worms and you don't have to go that far out of your way to see them. They have parking at the bottom and it is about a 2 minute walk up the hill to see the worms. It takes about 2 minutes for your eyes to adjust to see the worms and after playing with our camera settings we were even able to capture the little blue lights on our phones. It would be easy to go here just after sunset too and you don't have to pay a lot or spend too much time with the worms.
We walked from our hotel and spent about 15 minutes in the area to read the poster, look at the worms and attempt to take some pictures. The dell was not busy at all when we went and it is open 24/7.

We visited the Hokitika Glow Worm dell one evening after sunset. You can drive in from the main road, and the walk is only one or two minutes on a smooth track. Our kids loved it as there were heaps of glow worms,

Beautiful dell at the end of a slightly uphill short walk. It’s pretty during the daytime, but magical after dark. Be quiet and keep the torch (except for the walk up pointed at the ground by your feet) flash OFF. Definitely worth a visit, especially if you’re not planning on seeing glow worms elsewhere. How can you visit wonderful NZ and not see glow worms...

Seeing the glow worms was definitely on our New Zealand to do list and Hokitika was the perfect place to do it. Only a short walk from our motel and completely free! We went an hour or so after dark and it wasn't overly busy. It look time for our eyes to adjust to the darkness but once they did we started to see the glow worms! Definitely go if in Hokitika!

Entrance located opposite the Shining Star Beachfront Motel, on the other side of the main road. Go there after dark, with a red flashlight that you turn off once you get there. It is a small bushy wood where glow worms or rather larvae live which attract their prey thanks to this light. It's free and lovely. Don’t hesitate to silence noisy people (SHUT!) and make them turn off their lights (NO LIGHT PLEASE!)
