- kestonr2018Wellington, New Zealand261 contributionsJust five minutes from central HokitikaWe visited the Hokitika Glow Worm dell one evening after sunset. You can drive in from the main road, and the walk is only one or two minutes on a smooth track. Our kids loved it as there were heaps of glow worms,Visited October 2022Written 25 December 2022
- Liz_Mo1982Auckland Central, New Zealand121 contributionsLovely little glowworm dellLovely little glowworm dell. Went here with my daughter about half an hour after sunset. Due to high banks it was still plenty dark enough for all the glow worms to be seen. Short walk from road. Only a few minutes needed for this attraction. Must do if you are staying overnight in hokitikaVisited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 11 January 2023
- Linda BChristchurch, New Zealand10 contributionsQuite magical!A free attraction and well worth a visit at night to see the little critters glowing. Only steps from the carpark at the bottom of the hill. We actually went back during the day as well so that we could see the structure of the dell, which was quite fascinating.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 April 2023
- Deanosaur89Edmonton, Canada2,050 contributionsFree, Short and EasyWe didn't know about this before coming to Hokitika but thought it was absolutely worth it. There are lots of glow worms and you don't have to go that far out of your way to see them. They have parking at the bottom and it is about a 2 minute walk up the hill to see the worms. It takes about 2 minutes for your eyes to adjust to see the worms and after playing with our camera settings we were even able to capture the little blue lights on our phones. It would be easy to go here just after sunset too and you don't have to pay a lot or spend too much time with the worms. We walked from our hotel and spent about 15 minutes in the area to read the poster, look at the worms and attempt to take some pictures. The dell was not busy at all when we went and it is open 24/7.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 July 2023
- W1CLHamilton, New Zealand40 contributionsBlue Butt Light BugsWent at dusk as quite dark in the dell even at that time of day. Little blue lights glowing on the walls once your eyes adjust. Amazing what some bugs can do. Please don't use flash on cameras/phones, as it blinds the little worms and everyone else trying to view them. Take a torch/phone to see pathway as it's a short, gravel, uphill walk. Fenced both sides for safety. There's also a narrow side path that takes you up to the lighthouse at top of hill. I went back mid morning just to see what the dell looks like in daylight. All the ferns, moss and trees and a little trickle of water down one side. Would be a very cool area on a hot summers day. Worth a look day and night at least once while visiting Hokitika.Visited July 2023Travelled soloWritten 26 August 2023

If you are passing through Hokitika, make sure it's dark and this is well worth a 20-30 mins stop and virtually no walk, to see numerous Glow Worms........ for free!
Unsure on how this compares to a paid tour in Glow worm caves but to be honest? We saw these and ticked the Glow Worm box so didn't chase any other option.
Do it, it's well worth the stop.

Went about 10:30 pm. It’s easy to get to, not at all a difficult walk, and absolutely stunning—the glow worms were bright and plentiful! Would recommend to anyone at all. This was incredible.

One of the best places to see Glow Worms in NZ in winter. Very few people there. Very accessible even for those in a wheel chair.

This place is absaloutely fascinating. Easy parking at the entrance which is just as you arrive into Hokitika from the greymouth side. A short, easy 100m walk from the entrance takes you up to where the glow worms are. There are thousands and thousands. Very magical experience for adults and kids alike.

Great little place with a small area and not a long walk from the entrance. Plenty of glow worms to see and easy to spot
