About
Welcome to The National Kiwi Centre The National Kiwi Centre is situated in the heart of Hokitika in an undercover facility that provides viewing of kiwi in our nocturnal house that replicates their natural environment. During your visit you can take part in feeding the giant eels (10am, 12 noon and 3pm daily). The eels are approximately 85 to 100 years old. After the Eel feedings you can see the Kiwi being feed. view the tuatara, New Zealands oldest living dinosaur. Try your hand at catch and release crawly fishing fun for all ages . We have lots of other fish and creatures to look at. And it's all inside so no getting wet on that rainy day

It was wet day out and our Hotel room wasn’t ready for check in so we filled an hour visiting the Kiwi Centre. Entry was Included in our room package into the Kiwi Centre. First impressions was it was quite run down, couldn’t find or see creatures in their enclosure. No staff anywhere to help guide or educate us. Liked the eel tank in the centre, and as usual the Kiwi were really hard to find in the dark. We left there feeling a bit meh about our visit. This human kiwi has seen a lot better elsewhere.

AMAZING

We had an absolute blast at the National Kiwi Centre and it is a must see when in Hokitika. The staff were all extremely knowledgeable and helpful and went out of their way to ensure we had a great time. The Kiwi exhibition was amazing and allowed an up close and personal experience with two kiwis. I will definitely be back soon!

We loved this place. From the great guy at reception to the speaker at the eel feeding, they made us feel welcome and at home exploring this week presented little display. The kids loved feeding and touching the eels and catching the little koura on a line with a wee net... Then putting them straight back. Informative and fun hour spent there.

Great family experience

My granddaughter was delighted to catch a crawly and to be able to look at it close up. Our grandson was enthralled by the ells and the kiwi. Good outing enjoyed by all.

Good for children, opportunity to see kiwi
Nov 2020
The Centre is not large and most of the exhibits are aquariums (including whitebait and eels). The kiwi enclosure allows a close view of kiwi. Probably would be best for children.

Fun for everyone

If you want to guarantee seeing a kiwi, this is the place. They raise a pair as part of the conservation programme, releasing them into the wild when they are big enough. This was the first time I saw a kiwi and it was amazing. The other attractions are also cool, particularly the giant eels, which you can pat after feeding time if you're feeling brave enough.

Very interesting - must visit spot in Hokitika

Great spot, we really enjoyed seeing the energetic kiwis being fed and getting to feed the huge eels. A great centre with plenty to see and do - we will definitely recommend to our friends in Auckland to visit the centre and the West Coast region in general.

Bigger than it looks

The street front of the National Kiwi Centre in downtown Hokitika is only a couple of shops wide. But it goes a long way back, and has extraordinary diversity. Plan to spend at least an hour there. Enquire for the feeding Times for the eels and Kiwi. Education is the primary focus here, and they do it very well. Yes, there are kiwi and a very large aquarium with huge eels. Also a large pool with the small freshwater crayfish, which kids of all ages can try to catch. The section on kiwi is very interesting- who knew there are five different kinds throughout the country. There’s also whitebait gully, where we can learn about the life cycle of a west coast dinner delicacy.

Visit to see kiwi and feed eels
Oct 2020 • Couples
We visited the National Kiwi Centre today and had a very interesting time. Firstly viewing various turtles, fish, tuatara and then the eels! Amazingly large eels which we were able to feed ourselves and observe closely whilst the staff member informed us about them. The water was crystal clear in the aquariums. The two kiwi were clearly visible and very active and eventually came to feed very close to where we were standing. I have visited kiwi enclosures before but have never seen them so clearly and close up. There was an area set up with activities specifically for children. We enjoyed our visit and speaking to the owner and staff. Thank you!

A rainy day so not much else to do
Oct 2020 • Family
It’s ok and we spent around 75 minutes here during a particularly wet day. The kids seemed to enjoy it with some hands on stuff to do like eel feeding and trying to catch some small cray fish. It was also good to get so close to a kiwi without a sheet of Perspex in the way. The place is definitely in need of some attention and paint which makes it look v tired and dated and a bit musty smelling. The gift shop is a bit sad and lacking much of anything.
