About
Welcome to The National Kiwi Centre The National Kiwi Centre is situated in the heart of Hokitika in an undercover facility that provides viewing of kiwi in our nocturnal house that replicates their natural environment. During your visit you can take part in feeding the giant eels (10am, 12 noon and 3pm daily). The eels are approximately 85 to 100 years old. After the Eel feedings you can see the Kiwi being feed. view the tuatara, New Zealands oldest living dinosaur. Try your hand at catch and release crawly fishing fun for all ages . We have lots of other fish and creatures to look at. And it's all inside so no getting wet on that rainy day

This place from the outside looks like somewhere you may not bother with or looks run down. But don't judge the outside looks. Bit like the saying "don't judge a book by it's cover".
We were surprised how great it was when we visited. The outside looks are nothing compared to what is inside. This place is appropriate for all and there is lots to see. The guy who served us was friendly and informative.
My absolute favourite part was seeing the 2x kiwi birds. You will see them properly, the viewing space is open and wide meaning you will actually get the chance to see them. The eels are great to see too and there is even prawn fishing (fish and release).
All indoors, so also a great all year thing to do.

The Kiwi Centre looks pretty bad from the outside, in fact I visit Hokitika several times a year and have never been tempted to venture in. On New Year's Day with family visiting including a 15 month old and a 12 year old it was a great way to spend a few hours.
Inside it is huge and has lots to see including many fish tanks with a variety of fish from around the world, a huge two storey fish tank with giant eels swimming around which can be fed at the right time, a kiwi enclosure, tuatara (ancient lizards from the age of the dinasaur) and the favourite of the 12 year old and his mum—a pond where anyone can catch (and release) small crayfish. The boy loved it and it was fun to watch him.
I thoroughly recommend the Kiwi Centre if stuck in Hokitika on a wet day or for families with children.

Great place to visit- would highly recommend! We went to the eel feeding which was highly informative! Really enjoyed the opportunity to feed the eels too. The kiwis were easy to see in their enclosure and cool to see the frogs, fish and turtles too. Thank you to the hosts!

We had a great visit here. It is pretty much self-guided past the fish and tuataras but when you go at feeding time which is the best time to go you might be lucky enough to run into Lois. She has only been on the job about 6;weeks but she is really enthusiastic and learning every day. We got to feed the eels and saw kiwis up close and as it was feeding time they were very active. The Department of Conservation provide them with eels and kiwis so the operation is obviously approved by them. This is a great rainy morning option in Hokitika.

From the outside you cant hekp wonder if its just a big office with a tacky ticket sales counter inside that leads to a wildlife centre out of town.. but its not. It doesnt appear to be much until you walk inside and experience the fabulous fish tanks, the giant eel tank (and feeding the eels! Go on.. try it!) the giant fish tank, the hidden kiwi enclosure...make sure youre there at feeding time too. The kiwis run around and put on a show of their own. The lady who feeds the kiwis and the eels (she gives you tongs to feed them meat too, right at the top of the tank) is a walking encyclopaedia of knowledge about everything there. Its so friendly and fun. I loved it! Its so much better than I would have expected. I'd highly recommend this to any visitors, young or old. Give it a go, its a little treasure!

It was wet day out and our Hotel room wasn’t ready for check in so we filled an hour visiting the Kiwi Centre. Entry was Included in our room package into the Kiwi Centre. First impressions was it was quite run down, couldn’t find or see creatures in their enclosure. No staff anywhere to help guide or educate us. Liked the eel tank in the centre, and as usual the Kiwi were really hard to find in the dark. We left there feeling a bit meh about our visit. This human kiwi has seen a lot better elsewhere.

We had an absolute blast at the National Kiwi Centre and it is a must see when in Hokitika. The staff were all extremely knowledgeable and helpful and went out of their way to ensure we had a great time. The Kiwi exhibition was amazing and allowed an up close and personal experience with two kiwis. I will definitely be back soon!

We loved this place. From the great guy at reception to the speaker at the eel feeding, they made us feel welcome and at home exploring this week presented little display. The kids loved feeding and touching the eels and catching the little koura on a line with a wee net... Then putting them straight back. Informative and fun hour spent there.

My granddaughter was delighted to catch a crawly and to be able to look at it close up. Our grandson was enthralled by the ells and the kiwi. Good outing enjoyed by all.

The Centre is not large and most of the exhibits are aquariums (including whitebait and eels). The kiwi enclosure allows a close view of kiwi. Probably would be best for children.
