Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We were on a round the South Island hiking trip. This is a small town we dropped by. In addition to the warm and silky possum products, they have a lot of NZ jade. This particular store has a workshop behind the store. They welcome visitors to go in to visit and see the raw stone and artisans actually working on the jade pieces. They spent time explaining how they carve and polish the jade pieces. A learning experience, even if you do not purchase anything. Although they do have very nice jade jewelry.

They say that the place to buy Jade is in Hokitika. Although I did not buy any, this store was a museum in and of itself. It was fun to watch the Jade carvers at work. They have many large pieces of jade to look at and their display cabinets are filled. I found it a little pricey but would recommend a visit if in the area.

This store in Hokitika is a fabulous place for shopping for New Zealand Jade. Several jade items at reasonable pricing are available at this store. I shopped more than I anticipated. Customer service is extremely friendly and courteous. Would certainly very highly recommend this store for jade shopping to anyone.

Greenstone, aka Jade, or pounamu as the Maori people called it, is only found in certain areas of the West Coast of the South Island. Mainly the Hokitika area or Milford Sound area. Westland Jade stocks only New Zealand Jade. Many other shops around NZ, including Hokitika, will sometimes stock items made from Chinese Jade - similar but not the same. If you want the real stuff shop at Westland Greenstone.
I know what I have written above sounds like an advertisement, trust me, I have no connection to Westland Greenstone other than being part Maori and passionate about New Zealand. Pounamu is/was the Maori people's most precious possession. All Pounamu is owned by the Maori people (Tangata Whenua - People of the Land) and all jade shops have to buy the jade from the local iwi (tribe). Some manufacturers prefer to use cheaper Chinese jade instead.
If you are not fussy and are happy with the piece you have found and it reminds you of the great holiday you have had in NZ then that is wonderful. If you want to be sure it is authentic Pounamu (New Zealand Jade) ask the person behind the counter if it NZ jade - if they are honest they should tell you. Otherwise go to Westland Greenstone. They assure me that they stock nothing but locally sourced jade. I have known them all my life, I trust them, you can too!

The customer service was quite good and they sales people seemed to know what they were talking about. What I found frustrating is that they would only have one off's. It was also on the expensive side and I found the exact same pieces (the guaranteed New Zealand Jade) at the Antarctic Centre Christchurch for cheaper.

It was always a highlight going into Westland Greenstone and having a chat with Bernie and the boys and watch jade carvings and jewellery being produced. However times have changed and this shop and factory now displays a lot of cheaper general tourist items and has lost it`s uniqueness
There is still some nice jade pieces displayed but not a patch on that they had a few years ago, however it is still worth a visit..

This shop should be #1. All of their jade is guaranteed locally sourced, their designs are great and their customer service is second to none. I cannot praise them highly enough.

This quirky little store ( not so little on the inside) offers you an outstanding range of giftware. The jewellery that we saw here were one-offs , which made nicer gifts. I purchased several gifts inside and I assure you the recipients of the gifts have loved them. The interesting bit to this is that out the back of the store they invite you to see how the jade is treated, and how the whole process starts.

In late April 2009 we stopped at Westland and left with 4 large greenstone necklaces and an assortment of modest necklaces and earrings. Being able to see the craftspeople at work was impressive. A very professional operation, offering quality merchandise. We would rate this a must-visit for anyone interested in fine, unique remembrances of New Zealand.
