Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Amazing customer service. Great range of products. Special thanks to Mel and Sean who served us! We enjoyed our visit and will treasure the Mere, stones and jewellery and their positive energy and memories from Hokitika.

They say that the place to buy Jade is in Hokitika. Although I did not buy any, this store was a museum in and of itself. It was fun to watch the Jade carvers at work. They have many large pieces of jade to look at and their display cabinets are filled. I found it a little pricey but would recommend a visit if in the area.

We were on a round the South Island hiking trip. This is a small town we dropped by. In addition to the warm and silky possum products, they have a lot of NZ jade. This particular store has a workshop behind the store. They welcome visitors to go in to visit and see the raw stone and artisans actually working on the jade pieces. They spent time explaining how they carve and polish the jade pieces. A learning experience, even if you do not purchase anything. Although they do have very nice jade jewelry.

This store in Hokitika is a fabulous place for shopping for New Zealand Jade. Several jade items at reasonable pricing are available at this store. I shopped more than I anticipated. Customer service is extremely friendly and courteous. Would certainly very highly recommend this store for jade shopping to anyone.

We enjoyed the backroom tour of the workshop and the opportunity to chat with one of the artists creating the pounamu items. This, though, was one of our first stops in Hokitika with a great selection of greenstone, so we purchased here. As the trip progressed, we did find that there were likely better deals to be had.

We purchased a fern greenstone necklace for our 40th anniversary gift. I selected one from the case and the sales lady brought out at least 7-8 more from behind the counter. We were so impressed as she explained how, where, and all the details about the gathering and making of the greenstones. I have worn my necklace at home and received several wonderful comments. Please visit Westland and check them out!

On a drive up the Coast Highway (past Franz Joseph Township) we stopped in Hokitika and enjoyed a backroom tour and carving demonstration here. The manager and his staff at Westland Greenstone were informative both about the history of mining greenstone by native peoples and, later, by European settlers, and about the geology of the area that produces this gem quality mineral. After learning about what is often called New Zealand jade, we went into the shop and looked at all the hand and machine created jewelry made by the staff. Beautiful items and what was nice is that there was a sale going on of the previous Christmas season's unsold decorations and jewelry. This was a very good learning and shopping experience.

This is a fancy store. Yes, you can get some pieces from "well-known" artists. Don't think if you don't buy it here, you will miss out. I did. Greenstone is EVERYWHERE in the South. Especially if you are going to Queenstown, hold off. It is in every decent jewelry store there for reasonable prices. They also have an art fair on the weekends, and you will find tons of beautiful pieces for a fraction of the price you will pay at Westland. I am an artist and appreciate good work--especially by local artists you can talk to--I wish I had waited...

To begin, I was not that excited about the Westland Jade place because Jade doesn't stir me one way or the other. But listening to the short talk about Jade in the back of the Westland Gemstone store gave me a real appreciation for the mining and polishing the stone to the shape and color. Not that excited about Jade? Still you might include a stop and listen to the art and skill involved in working with Jade. And checkout the many styles and cuts and colors and prices in their store as well.
