On walking past I was immediately drawn to this gallery as a craftsperson myself. I am a Kiwi and rarely visit the plethora of tourist craft shops that abound in our country. The Hokitika Craft Gallery offers beautifully crafted objects by local artists. They have a range of items that I've not seen anywhere before. Bought some beautiful little gift cards for future use. Locally made beard balm for my husband, hand balm for myself (both with without plastic containers). And only just resisted the beautiful garden sculptures on display. The lovely lady working during my visit was both welcoming and very knowledgeable about the 70+ artists and crafts people represented in the shop. Would definitely visit again and highly recommend if you're looking for a unique and we'll made local item. …

A craft shop full of beautiful objects, staffed by helpful and friendly crafts people, not pushy though keen to make a sale obviously. Jim Gordon was particularly patient and encouraging in getting us to make up our minds about two jade pendants to celebrate many happy years together - better work here than in the more glossy and expensive main street outlets. Sorry we couldn't fit one of his wonderful wooden bowls into our luggage. Have you tried putting up the price a bit and offering free postage, Jim ? His recommendation of the Wildernss Lodge at Moeraki was spot on.…

thank you for your lovely comments! We've taken care to select a wide range of arts, crafts and specialized gift items and Jimmy's bowls are a special addition we are proud to display. Glad he multi-tasked as a tourist guide too! Your pendants will serve as a special reminder of your bond and time on the beautiful West Coast! Best regards, Juergen.

We had such a lovely experience in the store that in the same morning we returned 3 times!! The artwork on display was beautiful (and able to be shipped internationally) which was great to hear. The main reason we ended up buying two jade necklaces here was the quality of the pieces compared to some of the other shops in town. As the pieces we purchased were created by local artists, it felt more like they had purposely picked different pieces of jade and depending on the pattern or the colour had then let that dictate the style of the carving. We are thrilled with our pieces, they are going to be a lovely reminder of our trip. They lady who served us was delightful, helpful and generally great to speak to - even giving us the information about the Maori culture that we should gift these items to each other as it is part of the tradition. Along with the quality of the items in the store, her help and attentiveness really made it a lovely experience. …

We're so pleased you enjoyed the gallery and that you were able to select some very special pieces in memory of your trip to NZ. The Pounamu carvers we represent certainly know how to work the stone and bring out the very best with their design and finish. We know you will treasure them for many years to come, thanks again for your generous and appreciative comments of your experience, best wishes, Monika
