    Beautiful walk and amazing scenery
This is an amazing walk in native bush seeing beautiful glacier waters through the Hokitika Gorge. The drive to the start of the track is well sealed, there are also bathrooms located at the car park. The walk is an easy well maintained track suitable for most ages. The walk takes about 45mins to an hour. We would recommend this walk to everyone visiting the area and the best thing is that it is free, enjoy!!

Beautiful bush walk along scenic canyon
This is a relatively short walk through mature native bush along a canyon cut through an actively uplifting mountain cut by the Hokitika River. Two suspension bridges were quite scenic to cross. Well worth the visit.

Really is as good as it looks
We visited the Hokitika Gorge in October 2022. This is a must-see when you are in Hokitika. The walk is quite short, and the track is very smooth and mostly downhill to the gorge itself. It also looks around to the south on the way back through the bush to the carpark. We had a really nice picnic on the rocks between the two bridges. A good short visit.

Better than Haast Blue Pools – the best stop on the West Coast
Hokitika Gorge would be one of the most underrated sites on the South Island. The Gorge is a stunning glacial blue, and easily seen from a 45 minute loop track that crosses 2 spectacular suspension bridges in a lovely loop back to the car park. The Gorge is about half an hour’s drive from Hokitika, though if continuing on to the glaciers there’s a diversion that cuts out a section of the highway and some of the drive. There’s a decent sized carpark, and pit toilets at the trail head, which begins just to the right of the toilets. The track begins with a short down hill walk to the first suspension bridge, with great views most of the way, and some nice patches of rainforest. You can swim here at the beach, and then head back, or, follow the loop back to the car park over a 2nd bridge recently opened. Ignore the guidebooks – this is now a very easy 45 minute walk on a simple loop, and the views at the 2nd bridge are every bit as good as the first. After the 2nd bridge the track leaves the Gorge and winds back through the rainforest to the other end of the car park. This is an easy loop walk most people can manage, and the views are sensational, much, much better, bluer, and more spectacular than those at the more famous Haast “Blue” pools.

    Not to be missed!
Getting here requires a scenic but reasonably long drive out of Hokitika, but it is well worth it. Plenty of parking and there are toilets at the car park. It's an easy walk to the first lookout then a bit steeper down to the suspension bridge, but the path is good. There are several more lookout spots on the way to/past the river itself. Absolutely stunning views of milky blue glacial water. Lots of people were swimming at the main waterhole, but care is needed.

    Just Do It
A must do when you are in Hokitika, I can't believe I haven't done it before. It's an easy loop through lovely bush and an amazing suspension bridge (there are two) gives spectacular views of the gorge. The walk just keeps giving and giving with lovely views. Good car parking, we went before 9am and avoided the crowds.

    Highly recommend!
Another free Hokitika attraction. A big credit to everyone on track maintenance! The easy loop track is well worth the effort - we did it in 40 mins but if it hadn't been for the rain, we would have taken a much more leisurely stroll. The suspension bridges are awesome and the scenery - vegetation and water views are stunning!

A lovely way to spend some time in Hokitika
If in Hokitika, don't miss the gorge. Very beautiful. Walk on wooded paths takes about an hour, could be less but you will probably spend a bunch of time taking pictures. Two suspension bridges make the walk more exciting, but not at all scary.

    Beautiful glacier blue waters.
Beautiful blue water if you time the weather right. Easy walk to first viewing areas. May need a few more sign posts further in as we weren't the only ones that were unsure where the loop track went, and ended up turning back.

We did this on a dull and rainy day but the colours were still spectacular. Don’t stop at the viewing platform-do the walk. We thought it was amazing when we reached the suspension bridge but it just got better and better. It used to be a loop but now ends at the waters edge. It really isn’t a long walk and is easy to do. Absolutely recommend this.

Visited Oct 2023.
This has to be one of the highlights of our 3 week tour of both North and south Islands.
It is a truly amazing spectacle that blew our minds. It is very worth while going right down to the "beach" (which is actually low level rocks at water level) as the phot opportunities are incredible.
We visited on a lovely sunny day So can only comment on the water colour in those conditions but, the vivid blue is like the Azure Sea in Greece. It is truly amazing.
The walk used to be a round trip, over one swing bridge and along then over a second. However, I believe safety concerns with the older second bridge have forced its closure so it's now a return walk but this doesn't in any way detract from the experience.
Believe the photos........ It really is that stunning.
And??? It's completely free. To both park and do the walk. If this was in the UK you'd be ripped off for £15 parking then a ridiculous entry free. Well done NZ and the team that keep this Gorge for keeping it as great as it is and free to visit.

Amazing view! Make sure you go on a sunny day, the colour of the water is prettiest then. Easy walk through the bush with two suspension bridges over the gorge.

This is a lovely walk, the colours are amazing, the trail is very clear and easy to follow. When we went the pool was quite busy, if you walk on beyond that the crowd melts away and I practically had the place to myself

We had heard so much about the beautiful blue water of the gorge. So on our travels down the West Coast by campervan, this was considered as a top attraction for Hokitika. It s a bit of a drive to get to from the Hokitika township to get to , as you travel past farmland toward the mountains.
the track itself is well maintained and allows you many vantage points for viewing. As with all the pictures you see, the water is an amazing blue/green colour .
Well worth taking the time to go over the two bridges as its an easy walk .
