I have been to Hokitika many times and not paid much attention to this beautiful statue. It is located a block from the clock tower. It is dedicated to the pioneers.

I realised when I arrived in town that this place is the setting for Elanor Catton's book 'The Luminaries'. Set in 1868, most of that world has disappeared, but the statue provides a link to those pioneering days and is displayed in a prominent position in the centre of town.

Pioneers of the Frontier Statue is an interesting one as the statue seems to be pointing towards the former gold fields. It is located in the center of the town and one can’t miss it. Worth taking a good look and clicking a picture or two.

Ode to the pioneers of the gold fields.

I am not quite sure, but I was told the statue is pointing to the old goldfields. Not sure how true this is but its a statue to commemorate the pioneers of the gold rush area. Not sure, but I just liked it.
Its pretty hard to miss as its right in the center of a roundabout located in the town center.

Adds to the attraction of the Main Street

A block or so away from the Town Clock sits the Pioneers of the Frontier Statue. I gathered there had been some controversy around the current location, but the plus side is that visitors can't miss it.

Relocated History
Jan 2019 • Solo
Its a bit controversial this statue as most people wanted it left where it was however it now commands more attention and was well restored.

It is an interesting piece of history was originally near the old railway station. It has been vandalized once and is a sitting duck.

Pioneer Statue in the Town Centre
Sep 2018 • Couples
One of the interesting things to see in Hokitika is the Pioneers of the Frontier Statue situated in the Town Centre at the roundabout intersection of Weld Street and Tancred Street. You'll see he monument one block past the Hokitika Town Clock as you enter town.

The monument was originally erected on Fitzherbert Street in 1914 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1864 Gold Rush to the West Coast of New Zealand. It is a figure of a simple pioneer (originally) pointing to the goldfields. In 2016, the monument was restored and relocated to its present location in the Town Centre.

Overall, it is an interesting monument and link to the Gold Rush and early settlement of the Hokitika and other small communities around the West Coast.
