The Hokitika Museum is currently closed for Earthquake Strengthening. we expect it to open some time in 2022. Our research Centre remains open Monday through to Thursday, 9am - 5pm by appointment only. Hokitika Museum staff are as busy as ever, working behind the scenes to care for the vast collection of treasures belonging to the people of Westland, including new items that have recently been donated. Staff are involved in planning new exhibits for the Museum once it reopens.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Located in the historic Carnegie Library dating from around 1906, the building is looking good after restoration. However earthquake strengthening is an ongoing issue and when we called access was limited to one room where some posters showed the history of the building along with a few photos.

This museum is closed pending work to strengthen it against earthquakes. The front door is open and a few info boards are inside for those that are prepared to 'enter at your own risk'.

This lovely old building only has one room open to the public given it needs earthquake strenghtening, and sadly there seems to be few if any original features inside. But the outside of the building is a quite lovely Victorian structure. And check out the history of the building - funded by the famous Scottish-American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie.

Kids loved doing the activities and there really is something for everyone. Hokitika has a fascinating history, and it's well documented here. Don't try to rush your visit.

Very small museum. Nice stop. However, not a lot to see. The Westland Greenstone Ltd is more interesting.

Very interesting little place.

Some unusual items and good to kill some time especially during the west coast rain...

We arrived at this beautiful building, looking forward to visiting this museum. We were very disappointed to find it was closed until late 2020 or even early 2021. The museum items have not been transferred to another building temporarily. There's only one room with some photos. Hokitika is losing a major tourist attraction this way.

This beach is known for finding green stone on it. We enjoyed the walk along it. There are big rocks that you need to climb to get to it, so be careful.

If you want to get an insight into the history of Hokitika this is a must visit museum. There are some lovely exhibits that tell the stories of gold mining, early transport to the west from Christchurch and the early settlers. A little gem in a lovely town.
