About
Whangārei Art Museum is Northland's premier public art gallery, and the custodian of the city's outstanding art collection. Whangārei Art Museum (WAM) hosts touring and internally curated exhibitions, and showcases artistic excellence in creative art practice throughout Northland, New Zealand and beyond. The museum’s own collection contains heritage and contemporary artworks, and several significant bequest collections. As kaitiaki (guardians/custodians), WAM conserves the collection to New Zealand Museum Standards Scheme. This ensures the artworks in our care are optimally preserved - so current and future generations can explore our rich cultural heritage and new artistic ideas. FREE to visit, and open daily 10am-4pm. We’d love to welcome you soon.

The feature exhibition was very poignant and moving, reflecting on the different environments in which the children of the world are growing up. Friendly staff. Spacious and clean.

Stopped in with a local to look at the Hunterwasser scale model...this will be a real tourist draw card when it I see finished! Viewed the accompanying exhibition in the gallery featuring several locally trained artists. Worth a look!

WE had parked our motor home and walked along the basin to find a cafe for lunch, popping into the museum on the way. It was ok but a bit bland, I would like to see more variety of art works in the gallery and shop, as it is in such a good spot.

This museum shares premises with the I-Site. When I was there, it had two exhibits, both of which I enjoyed. Since entry is free, it is definitely worth visiting if you pop into the I-Site.

Staff are super friendly here at the exhibitions and didn't mind that myself and another friend felt the need to sit in the peace and quiet of the graffiti artists display and take some therapeutic time colouring the templates in for kids...!
The photo display and story was beautiful and an interesting part of Maori history that I enjoyed learning about.
It is a truly great set up for artists and photographers.

Lucky to see the exhibition of Euan Macleod paintings. Beautifully laid out too. Worth making time for.

Every time I visit this Gallery I am impressed by the high quality art on show. Visitors must go and see the exhibitions and prepare to be delighted with the range of work on display. This is a compact neat Gallery and is adjacent to the proposed new Hundertwasser building that will house two galleries, one for the great Austrian New Zealand artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser and the other for high quality Maori artists. The juxtaposition of these three galleries will put Whangarei on the cultural map in the Pacific. In the meantime visitors to the Whangarei Art Museum can see the 'Seed' or 'Te Kakano' on the harbourside as the start of the Hundertwasser project. WAM is minutes from a number of very good eating places.

They have a nice space, but don't really seem to be able to make a good exhibition with it. A good selection of artists and some interactive stuff. But a lack of professionally when it comes to nametags and informatie. It all looked kind of sloppy.
But free and open for donations as many of the NZ musea.
