    Friendly staff, engaging artwork
Stumbled onto this art gallery by accident! We had a very warm welcome by the friendly staff, who immediately gave us a short explanation of the exhibitions that were going on! Very intriguing artwork that will make you pause and think. Would recommend!

    Fabulous Contemporary Art Museum
This gallery is fantastic. It is a remarkable example of a contemporary gallery in a small city. The Dan Arps show was on when I visited. It is an installation piece as good as one would see in any quality international contemporary gallery. It was suprising, challenging and funny. I am exited to see such a brilliant exhibition in Whangarei. The staff were welcoming, warm and knowledgeable, happy to engage and inform. It also has a great little art and design bookshop. I will be visiting again and encourage anyone interested in contemporary art to support this excellent experience. The location is easy to find with good parking and close to a lovely restaurant on the water overlooking the marina. Take a few hours and soak it up. 100% recommend.

    A hidden gem
So good. Taken there by a friend that lives locally and saw a Dan Arps exhibition. I regularly visit galleries around the world and the exhibition is right up there. The building isn't great but whats inside makes up for it!

Staff are super friendly here at the exhibitions and didn't mind that myself and another friend felt the need to sit in the peace and quiet of the graffiti artists display and take some therapeutic time colouring the templates in for kids...!

The photo display and story was beautiful and an interesting part of Maori history that I enjoyed learning about.

It is a truly great set up for artists and photographers.

Innovative curation (for example artists arranging other artists), good pictures, and fabulous building play space for youngsters. Very helpful staff, and first rate art bookshop.

Every time I visit this Gallery I am impressed by the high quality art on show. Visitors must go and see the exhibitions and prepare to be delighted with the range of work on display. This is a compact neat Gallery and is adjacent to the proposed new Hundertwasser building that will house two galleries, one for the great Austrian New Zealand artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser and the other for high quality Maori artists. The juxtaposition of these three galleries will put Whangarei on the cultural map in the Pacific. In the meantime visitors to the Whangarei Art Museum can see the 'Seed' or 'Te Kakano' on the harbourside as the start of the Hundertwasser project. WAM is minutes from a number of very good eating places.

It is always nice to get Info and as an extra, to get some artistic insights; the Art Museum is part of the local Tourist Information Office and as such was a pleasant surprise; good art, some on loan fro te Papa in Wellington; and some free arty brochures.

Whangarei has a small but wide-ranging collection of art, paintings, sculpture and decorative art. It has struggled to find a home in recent years, but now its location in The Hub at the Town Basin provides a great venue with easy parking. An active programme of changing exhibitions means there is always something of interest to see, meaning return visits are essential.

This is well worth a visit both for the art and the lovely old building and gardens. Popped in here while we were visiting the basin.

Located at The Hub in the Town Basin centre, the Whangarei Art Museum has much to offer with their fabulous art selection and wonderful venue. This is a great place to escape to for a bit of quiet reflection. While a relatively small museum, it is modern and has a great variety of work to see which includes pieces by some of New Zealand's most famous artists. Very friendly staff.

This place was one of the highlights of our trip North. We stopped in Whangarei on the way up to Bay of Islands and had a quick look. We will hopefully be back next year to spend more time in Whangarei.
