Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Did this walk in September. Parking at the start is quite spacious. The weather was fine but the track was still muddy in some places. There are a lot of steps to the top which can make this walk quite hard when you’re not in a good shape. It took us around an hour to reach the top with plenty of short resting periods. The view at the top is very nice but there was a lot of wind so didn’t stay too long. Be careful with children as there is no fencing at the top so it can be dangerous for them!

The DOC site rates thos track as low to moderate. Our fitness levels are relatively low and I struggled with the amount of steps. But it was all worth it in the end, with incredible views over the bay of islands.

Car park was easy to find, and big enough for the amount of traffic. The track entrance is right off the edge of the car park so no getting lost.

Hiked the famous Mt Mainia on a rather cloudy day, so no good views. Still a very nice, but strenuous hike - a lot of stairs and some uphill. But beautiful through native forest.
And with a view it must be even better!!!

Great trail through evergreens, tropical plants. Well maintained trail, frequent stairs. Moderately strenuous but you can go at your own pace. Worth the trek up. About two hours 4 KM round trip even with viewing time along the way and at top

A nice spaced out walk with a beautiful view of the Whangārei Harbour and surrounding beaches and houses. It's nice to do year round as the trees shelter you from both sun and rain.

Would definitely recommend this walk to anyone and everyone :)

Outstanding view. Well formed track, under repair following recent weather events. Check signs at entrance from car park. Steps and walking platforms where needed means that access is good fr most people capable of walking up steps 310m to top. Comfortable 1 hour to top and slightly less on the way down

We decided to do this walk the morning before we moved in with our trip we only had a morning but so needed to find a walk that wasn't going to take too long. It was perfect it took about 1.30hours. There are a lot of steps but views are well worth it.

DoC rates it as easy to moderate 4km short walk however when you include majority steep steps it is not an easy walk even for an avg fit person. I am relatively sporty but I was catching my breathe more than once. Having said that I did see people of all abilities up for a challenge. Take a water bottle and have sturdy shoes, the track is relatively all shaded from native bush which was nice. Few good photo ops on the way and plenty at summit.
Way down was a breeze.

A friend and I did this yesterday, He hasn’t exercised for the last couple of months and found it challenging so, just be aware it’s all uphill and includes about 1000 steps. We had a few rest breaks And took About 1 hour 20 to the top ( if u r fit though u could do in 45) Gorgeous view from there. On the way down pretty easy and will take between 30 and 60 minutes depending on your fitness level as fun to jog down.
Really glad we made the effort!

You need to have some hill-walking confidence to walk up this steep track but the views are worth it. Take it slow, enjoy the beautiful native bush on the way up. Be respectful and take some time at the top to soak up the view.
