There is more than meets the eye there, with kiwi, museum, walks, trains, observatory and bird hospital. Pencil 3rd Sunday of the month for train rides. You can also take a Route 6 bus from the Whangarei city( Rose st, bus depot) for an easy ride there. Not all the facilities are open all the time, please check when the train rides are, they are on more frequently during the school holidays. Some museum exhibits are trying a bit too hard(like a teddy bear from 2000 which was given to someone when they were an adult ), but the staff is lovely and helpful and the money are used for a good cause.

If you want to be almost guaranteed to see a kiwi in NZ, this is the way to do it!! The kiwis are the star of Kiwi North, but the staff are a very close second. They are incredibly knowledgeable and were very happy to take time to talk about kiwis, answer our million questions, explain their quirks and habits, and how they take care of their current resident kiwis. They raise young kiwis until they are ready to be released into the wild, and are clearly up on the latest science and information about how best to take care of their precious young ones.
Freya and the as-yet to be named male kiwi were both out of their burrows and running around a little bit while we were there. We stayed for the 3 pm feeding, which got them very excited. The other feeding time is 11 am, we learned. When they were in their burrows, there are live-feed cameras so you can see them up close and personal.
Kiwi North also has geckos, fish, spiders, stick insects, locusts (bred to feed to the kiwis), a very nice and small museum, and a vast outside area to explore with historic houses and buildings, so there is a lot to do here!
Highly recommend this place - esp at the kiwi feeding times of 11 am and 3 pm - their staff, and of course, their kiwis. An hour and a half will suffice to explore everything at your leisure.

We got to see the new kiwi! We got so lucky , as they just arrived last night! The boy fully came out of his burrow! We got to see him just after his 3 o’clock feeding time, and the feeder came out and told us all about both the kiwis!!
All staff was amazing and helpful and full of information not only about the grounds, but about all the animals and the new kiwis! And the upstairs museum was also amazing to see.
It’s a must see for the whole family! Hopefully you’ll get your chance to see them in person!

Such friendly and knowledgeable staff greeted us as we entered. One of the ladies, Arwen provided basically a private narrated tour of some of the geckos, fish and other exhibits. The nocturnal kiwi sanctuary is very interesting, had the opportunity to see the kiwi up close, and saw her being fed and eating. Learned a lot about the significance of kiwi and their role in NZ.
There are other exhibits in the museum upstairs that tell the history of the area and the people of New Zealand. Happy to support a local facility such as this. Definitely worth a visit!

Very interesting museum with videos worth viewing and lots of great artifacts. All presented really well. The kiwi house and related wildlife is good - kiwi was a bit shy but we did see her running around and the geckos were of interest. The heritage park was interesting but mostly closed while we were there. One of us found a couple of items in the gift shop he has been after for some time. So all good and we'd recommend. Very friendly and informative ladies on duty

Was great seeing the kiwi and geckos. The museum and chair exhibits were small and unfortunately we ran out of time to see the trains and the outside areas. Was quite cool seeing the whale and moa skeletons.

Hi, What is the entrance fee to the Kiwi House?
Allie F
Whangarei, New Zealand5 contributions
Kia ora,
Allie here from Kiwi North. As others have already answered our entrance fees are:
$20 adults
$15 adult students and seniors (65 in NZ but we honour whatever the age is in the visitors country)
$5 children at school
Pre-schoolers are free
$45 family pass
Kiwi feedings with keeper talk are at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. In saying that the birds are out and about most of the time and we have cameras in their burrows. We have other native animals such as gecko and a young tuatara.
Allow yourselves a couple of hours as entrance includes the Whangarei Museum and the Heritage Park with heritage buildings and great grounds. you can go in and out of any of the venues as many times as you wish. Our hours are 10am to 4pm but if you arrive later and run out of day we are happy to sign your ticket so you can come back to explore further.
I hope you get to visit us soon.
Regards
Allie and team at Kiwi North

What time is kiwi feeding time?

The feeding times now are 11am, 1pm and 3pm. As the birds are starting to grow up they do self feed from time to time and are more active after the first and third feeding. Kiwis are night birds so visitors should arrive a little early so that their sight adjusts to the darkness.

Please advise if this location is wheelchair friendly?
Allie F
Whangarei, New Zealand5 contributions
Hello there,
Thank you for your enquiry.
Yes the Museum and Kiwi House are definitely wheelchair friendly. They are on different levels but there is a lift. Our bathrooms are wheelchair approved.
Exploring the Park may present some difficulties depending in the chair but you can drive from the Museum/Kiwi House end to the area where the Clarke Homestead is. We hope you come to see us soon. Best regards from the Kiwi North team.
