- AliNew Zealand651 contributionsThere is much more to see than you thinkThere is more than meets the eye there, with kiwi, museum, walks, trains, observatory and bird hospital. Pencil 3rd Sunday of the month for train rides. You can also take a Route 6 bus from the Whangarei city( Rose st, bus depot) for an easy ride there. Not all the facilities are open all the time, please check when the train rides are, they are on more frequently during the school holidays. Some museum exhibits are trying a bit too hard(like a teddy bear from 2000 which was given to someone when they were an adult ), but the staff is lovely and helpful and the money are used for a good cause.Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 6 November 2023
- Deborah A1 contributionWorth a visitWell worth the very easy 15 min bus ride out of town. The kiwi house is well set up with a large enclosure and once your eyes have adjusted it's a pleasant place to sit and hope to see a kiwi. The odds are increased at feeding time and through burrow-cams and these sweet shy birds are wonderful to see. Lots of other interesting things on this site as well; some are works in progress but a very pleasant place to spend a few hours. Ice creams and cold drinks available.Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 26 January 2024
- Lucy A.Chichester, United Kingdom110 contributionsWay more than just kiwis! We went to see the kiwis but were pleasantly surprised by how much there is to do here. The museum has lots of interesting fossils and artefacts, there’s a model railway and lots of different niche clubs to look around. Worth paying a visit if you’re in the area!Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 February 2024
- OhJoyManchester, United Kingdom46 contributionsGreat kiwi experience. We went to see the kiwi, however, there is plenty more to see in the museum and little village. Kiwi feeding is 11.00am. We arrived just after 10.00am and spent an hour watching these amazing birds searching for food, running around and bobbing back and to into their little homes. At 11.00am they are giving food close to the viewing window..... so lovely to see them feeding close up. Well worth a visit.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 February 2024

Short walk over ridgebto all the rides; ride on train, conventional train carriage, hay cart rise and tram rides all on 3rd Sunday each month and very reasonable charges. Me and my two girls came for a couple of hours and loved it. Lila at reception made a huge fuss of the girls and set them up with a scavenger hunt. We completed all the tasks which was super fun. We also had a ride on the miniature train and the lovely older guys working on it were so nice to us.
Also the girl Kiwi, Disco, runs around her enclosure so you get to see her up close through the glass. Was so gorgeous.
Highly recommend.

What a fantastic day we had. Saw Kiwi in their natural habitat & they were active. Also saw native geckos & Tuatara. Kiwi North is a must see when in Whangarei. The Whangarei Museum is in the same building and is very interesting. In another building is Bird rescue where you can see birds waiting to be released back into the wild. Of particular note, there is a talking Tui! Lovely to see the birds rehabilitated ready to return home.

MOST amazing place to see Kiwi and Tuatara in Northland and an incredible Museum, Great price for both and goes to a good cause helping protect our living and non living history here in Nz. Great Nz tourism and great staff. Well worth it!

Was great seeing the kiwi and geckos. The museum and chair exhibits were small and unfortunately we ran out of time to see the trains and the outside areas. Was quite cool seeing the whale and moa skeletons.

Have been to kiwi houses before but this was the first time I have seen not one but two! Set up in a natural environment this experience was magical. Also enjoyed seeing geckos, wandering through the museum and the heritage village. Worth the visit.

Hi Wideyedkiwi (love the name)
Thank you for your beautiful review. We have worked hard to get our environments as natural as possible and the behaviour and health of our animals reflects this. Zephyr and Raukura are great advocates for their species, very active and comfortable in their home. They will move on when more mature and enter the captive breeding programme or be released to a wild sanctuary. And we will get another captive bred pair to raise.
Wonderful that you had time to explore the Museum and go for a wander around the Park.
Thanks for visiting and for taking the time to post a review.

Such friendly and knowledgeable staff greeted us as we entered. One of the ladies, Arwen provided basically a private narrated tour of some of the geckos, fish and other exhibits. The nocturnal kiwi sanctuary is very interesting, had the opportunity to see the kiwi up close, and saw her being fed and eating. Learned a lot about the significance of kiwi and their role in NZ.
There are other exhibits in the museum upstairs that tell the history of the area and the people of New Zealand. Happy to support a local facility such as this. Definitely worth a visit!

The nocturnal house for the kiwi was great and we had an awesome view of the kiwi feeding and roaming around. Other reptiles were well presented in natural habitats and were visible. The museum is well set out and has some different artefacts and a good history of the north. Well worth a visit.

Hi there,
Thank you so much for firstly spending time with us, then writing a review.
We appreciate every bit of feedback. This kiwi pair are great advocates for their species, very busy and very visible within their enclosure.
We are very happy that you enjoyed your visit.

We were lucky enough to see a couple of kiwi when we visited Kiwi North. They were feeling particularly frisky as they raced around their enclosure. After seeing the kiwi we went for a quick wander around the museum before venturing outside to the heritage park. Nice way to spend a couple of hours.

Hi, What is the entrance fee to the Kiwi House?
Written 21 January 2017
Kia ora,
Allie here from Kiwi North. As others have already answered our entrance fees are:
$20 adults
$15 adult students and seniors (65 in NZ but we honour whatever the age is in the visitors country)
$5 children at school
Pre-schoolers are free
$45 family pass
Kiwi feedings with keeper talk are at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. In saying that the birds are out and about most of the time and we have cameras in their burrows. We have other native animals such as gecko and a young tuatara.
Allow yourselves a couple of hours as entrance includes the Whangarei Museum and the Heritage Park with heritage buildings and great grounds. you can go in and out of any of the venues as many times as you wish. Our hours are 10am to 4pm but if you arrive later and run out of day we are happy to sign your ticket so you can come back to explore further.
I hope you get to visit us soon.
Regards
Allie and team at Kiwi North

The feeding times now are 11am, 1pm and 3pm. As the birds are starting to grow up they do self feed from time to time and are more active after the first and third feeding. Kiwis are night birds so visitors should arrive a little early so that their sight adjusts to the darkness.

Please advise if this location is wheelchair friendly?
Written 30 April 2016
Hello there,
Thank you for your enquiry.
Yes the Museum and Kiwi House are definitely wheelchair friendly. They are on different levels but there is a lift. Our bathrooms are wheelchair approved.
Exploring the Park may present some difficulties depending in the chair but you can drive from the Museum/Kiwi House end to the area where the Clarke Homestead is. We hope you come to see us soon. Best regards from the Kiwi North team.
