Whangarei Quarry Gardens is a subtropical oasis created by volunteers in the remnants of a former quarry in Northland, New Zealand. The Gardens are open to the public and feature subtropical gardens, native forest walks, waterfalls, streams, quarry ruins, tunnels, a scented Camellia collection, a plethora of NZ native and exotic plant species and so much more... The Gardens are a work in progress and have been created through the blood, sweat, tears and laughter of volunteers, supporting companies and other interest groups. Entry is by GOLD-COIN DONATION, with all proceeds used to purchase plants and equipment. Thanks!

This is a Garden that offers many ‘different’ subtropical plants that are rarely seen in gardens. On a sunny day a leisurely walk around this charming oasis is an absolute pleasure. There is a delightful cafe to end your tour.

An old quarry has been rehabilitated, largely by volunteers. And the plants are doing SO WELL! I would also recommend the Quarry Arts Centre, which is at a separate location.

This place was a real revelation. An abandoned quarry was donated for public use, and developed over the last 20 years into a stunning and varied garden. You are asked to pay a gold coin donation, which is a very small price to pay for...More

Very popular cafe, great food and service. You can buy a ticket here to go for a stroll through the gardens in the old quarry. Makes a lovely morning out.

This review should be assigned to Quail Cafe, Whangarei. This is our on-site cafe, but is run as a separate business. Any reviews specifically about the cafe is better handed to them. Thanks

Loved the quarry. Great place to walk around. Loved the natural setting in an unusual place. Wild and interesting. Will definitely visit again. Car Park makes it convenient too.

Awesome enjoyable walk around surrounding gardens and bush . Enjoyed sitting in various areas admiring the work of the many volunteers. A credit to them and our city. Relaxing luncheon break after at Quail Cafe such a great addition to the Quarry Gardens.

great place for a picnic, for plant enthusiasts the Gardens have multiple different areas (e.g. tropical, succulents, edibles, etc). A bit away from the city but worth a visit

The gardens are open daily, including public holidays from 9am. So yes should be open on Labour Day. There is no set fee but they do ask for a gold coin ($1 or $2) per person. You are of course welcome to give a larger... More
