Overview
More
Whangarei Quarry Gardens is a subtropical oasis created by volunteers in the remnants of a former quarry in Northland, New Zealand. The Gardens are open to the public and feature subtropical gardens, native forest walks, waterfalls, streams, quarry ruins, tunnels, a scented Camellia collection, a plethora of NZ native and exotic plant species and so much more... The Gardens are a work in progress and have been created through the blood, sweat, tears and laughter of volunteers, supporting companies and other interest groups. Entry is by GOLD-COIN DONATION, with all proceeds used to purchase plants and equipment. Thanks!

Went with my son and his family to the Quarry Gardens. There were very few people there, lots of walking paths. Amazing scenery - where the water falls are cascading down almost looks like a scene out of Jurassic Park. Plants mostly labelled. Lots of...More

We have been visiting the gardens over the last decade or more and each visit delights. These quarry gardens are superior to other like gardens we have visited over the years. A gradual walk for those seeking a gentle walk, a walk of discovery for...More

I recently visited the gardens and cafe with a close friend. This is an amazing place and the local volunteers and Council have achieved a beautiful space from an old quarry. They hold art exhibitions here on various occasions which enhance the use of these...More

We visited the quarry to view the gardens and the restaurant which was closed as it was a Monday. Nevertheless, I found the gardens exceptionally beautiful and was impressed that they are maintained by volunteers, some of whom were working in the garden. We walked...More

Aaaahhh, so restful, so beautiful, such a dedicated bunch of volunteers. The cafe is lovely, maybe at bit more pricy, but this didn't deterr us from spending time in paradise.

Lovely gardens to wander round, created from old quarry and now lovingly tended. Worth a visit, very attractive!

Have been to this cafe a few times in the past few months, once for breakfast and once for a coffee in the late morning. Both times the service has been second to none, and the food has been exceptional. The scenery around the cafe...More

My sister and I followed the tracks in the guide leaflet and viewed amazing gardens. A lake fed by a small but tall waterfall is a startling feature. We also walked a side track, this features 100 kauri planted as a celebration. Astonishing range of...More

This is a Garden that offers many ‘different’ subtropical plants that are rarely seen in gardens. On a sunny day a leisurely walk around this charming oasis is an absolute pleasure. There is a delightful cafe to end your tour.

The gardens are open daily, including public holidays from 9am. So yes should be open on Labour Day. There is no set fee but they do ask for a gold coin ($1 or $2) per person. You are of course welcome to give a larger... More
