Whangarei Quarry Gardens is a subtropical oasis created by volunteers in the remnants of a former quarry in Northland, New Zealand.

The Gardens are open to the public and feature subtropical gardens, native forest walks, waterfalls, streams, quarry ruins, tunnels, a scented Camellia collection, a plethora of NZ native and exotic plant species and so much more...

The Gardens are a work in progress and have been created through the blood, sweat, tears and laughter of volunteers, supporting companies and other interest groups.

Entry is by GOLD-COIN DONATION, with all proceeds used to purchase plants and equipment. Thanks!

My mum and I had a lovely morning looking around the gardens. We absolutely loved it and came away with some ideas for our own gardens! Our only complaint would be that there were no rough times on the upper trail signs. We were under a but of time pressure so we only went up as far as the upper... More

This place is amazing. Safe, beautiful walks with exotic plants, bubbling streams, paths through interesting old quarry ruins and a wonderful cafe at the end of your walk to sit and enjoy. Good parking by the cafe is safe. Lovely, peaceful and all done by volunteers, marvellous.

Spend a couple of hours wandering around this development that was once an old quarry and now is beautifully landscaped and planted. Very peaceful despite being right in town. It will be quite an attraction as the plants mature and the bird life increases too.

The venue is lovely and the service we got was excellent. We turned up unexpectedly to see if they had wheelchairs access. They did not. The Manager David accommodated us with a tour on their new buggy. The information he provided while touring the gardens was brilliant. The volunteers that have planted this garden and look after it what a... More

Thank you for your kind review. And our first review about our new Golf Cart too! Isn't it fabulous? We are so lucky to be able to offer the service to those who can't easily manage the paths. It really opens up the gardens to a lot of people who otherwise couldn't enjoy them. We hope to see you here... More

Any traveller to Whangarei should make the effort to stroll round these stunning gardens which have been established for over 20 years all due to the hard work of volunteers. It gives you a real insight into the flora of the North Island which is so totally different to the South.

It is well worth a stop, so close to the town centre and with a nice cafe to enjoy as well before or after walking the interesting garden paths that meander up to the lake below the quarry itself. The many exotic plantings as well as native shrubs and trees carefully tended by volunteers would encourage anyone to become a... More
