Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

If you're a repeat visitor to Whanganui you'll be disappointed that the old gallery on the hill is still closed (I assume for earthquake strengthening ), but still worth popping into the Taupo Quay facility. Unfortunately the day we visited half of it was closed while they changed exhibitions but there were some nice ceramics and photographs to see. If you're an art lover you'll want to visit if only support this regional institution.

Whanganui's impressively large and domed Sarjeant Gallery in Queens Park has been undergoing renovations since 2014, and we were told it would be reopening in 2024. In the meantime, a tiny part of the gallery's collection is on display in a temporary gallery on Taupo Quay, across from the i-site. It is only a small site and it took us about 20 minutes to view. The giftshop here is quite small too - but what it lacks in size is made up for by the quality of their items on display.

The staff at this gallery were very friendly and helpful. The gallery is situated near the river, so a lot of nice buildings, coffee places and pubs close by. This gallery is displaying selected material from the substantial classical style gallery which stands atop a nearby hill in the civic precinct. It is currently closed as it is being assessed to see how it can be made earthquake proof - a wise move in New Zealand I guess. The exhibition we saw about the work and book of a local artist was very well curated and presented. Apparently this town/city has the highest percentage of artists of all NZ towns. A very attractive spot. Wished we could have spent more time there.

The original building is currently under going rennovations to comply with updated earthquake building codes. Unfortunately, this leaves only a tiny portion of the museum's collection on view at the quayside location. Hugely disappointed. Anticipated reopening 2019?

Thoughtfully put together with a story line linking the exhibits. Friendly staff. Shame the original building was undergoing earthquake strengthening so the exhibit was in temporary premises.

The original Sarjeant Gallery is going to be upgraded (big job!) but this "pop-up shop" is still worth a visit. Free entry, interesting little gallery shop, very friendly receptionist the day we went.

The main building that used to house the gallery is undergoing seismic strengthening and the works are currently in I Site building. It is a temporary gallery which has lots of interesting works and worth having a look at.

I love Art, and I love Architecture. So I visited as many museums, galleries and distinctive buildings as I could.
This is a lovely small gallery (keep in mind I'm used to european ones) but pretty interesting, with some amazing and inspiring work exposed. Absolutely worth the visit if you're in Wanganui.
And the building is a littyle jewel in itself! Beautiful, fine proportion between the volumes, and the light inside is enchanting. I don't know if it's the colours, the spaces or what, but it gives the ultra-bright New Zealand light a soft vibe that made me feel relaxed and in the same time permitted full enjoyment of the artwork.
An exquisite experience

While the domed Sarjeant Gallery is under repair you can still visit Sarjeant on the Quay and see some super artworks and collections. Small gift shop at the entrance has beautiful items too.
