A very pleasant trip up the Whanganui river today on the Wairoa. The captain and his team were very friendly and informative on the local history along the way. Would highly recommend.

A great choice to go up the Whanganui River with Captain Sam and his crew, on the Wairua. A lovely relaxed trip with beautiful scenery and accompanied by Sam's excellent commentary. He has an extensive knowledge of the history of the area and the vessel, and it was all further elevated by his obvious enthusiasm and love of his job. We stopped for lunch at Upokongaro, having the choice of a historic pub and a lovely cafe. Sam arranged to open St Mary's, a beautiful, historic church, for us to visit. Again he knew the history and made the trip meaningful. I highly recommend this experience.

We road the Mountains to Sea trail and met Sam and the Wairua at Upokongaro where our bikes were loaded onto the boat. We had enough time to go with Sam to see the local historic church - a real gem with its funny steeple made of kerosene tins, beautiful rimu wood worth and lovely rose garden. The cruise down to Whanganui was a gem with Sam's thoughtful comments on the heritage as we headed down. This was a lovely experience and it was a delight to listen to Sam talk with so much passion for local heritage and about how he is building this small business. A great time and the sort of local business its a joy to support.

Joined the MV Wairua at Upokongaro and could secure our bikes on board while we visited the local church with its strange, kerosine tin, spire and lovely rimu-lined interior with stained glass window. Sam, skipper, enthusiast and guide, opened the church and told us its history. Out on the river, he continued with interesting snippets about the vessel itself and some shipping and local history. It was a very peaceful interlude and took us almost to the Whanganui i-site, our next meeting place on our bike tour.
