Undoubtedly the most authentic way to experience Whanganui River’s scenery and history. Regular cruises aboard the iconic Waimarie Paddle Steamer - NZ’s only coal-fired paddle steamer operating from the golden riverboat era - are available during warmer months (October - April) and private charter cruises can be made by arrangement anytime. View cruise entertainment, timetable, prices and purchase tickets online or at the Waimarie Centre, where you can also uncover river memorabilia at the Waimarie Museum and marvel at a 134-year old architecturally designed building.

We went on the two-hour "Cruising at 11", which was very enjoyable. There was some commentary along the way, though it was not always audible. The Waimarie has a small cafe on board, serving excellent scones with jam and cream.

WHen arriving in Wanganui we saw this steam paddle boat and was hoping to have a trip. Just our luck they were going to be open on good Friday and so we went out for a lovely two hour trip up the river, which was very full because of all the rain. Great trip and lovely people on board, nothing... More

It is like stepping back in history with the two hour trip up the river on the paddle steamer. This has been lovingly restored with obvious pride taken by all crew members. The commentary is well done providing an insite into the significance of the river to Whanganui and the Maori people. Releasing pigeons with messages written by passengers shows... More

A 2 hour trip on a 100 year old paddle steamer, rescued from a watery grave and then re-built as a wonderful piece of history. Jenny Patrick's novel, Landings, should be read as it adds an authentic image of those bygone times. The commentary added to the enjoyment of the trip as did the use of a carrier pigeon to... More

Exciting for the kids to see how a steam ship works. They asked 'what's coal?' !! However very expensive for a family to afford. I guess it's for the tourists not for New Zealanders. Such a shame.

A great way to spend a couple of hours; relaxing and peaceful. The running commentary was informative without taking attention away from the landscape and ambiance. A mixture of old and young, NZ-ers and tourists. Good value for money!

The dedication of those who restored this lovely old steamer and created the museum that captures an important part of New Zealand history is amazing. The trip took us an hour up the river and back again. Food and refreshments were available while the tour leader mixed with the sightseers so it was easy to ask questions of him. For... More

We saw lots of city views and a bit of the country on the trip. The commentary was informative and good. It is amazing how they can turn such a big boat around in so little space. Children can send notes back to the base on a carrier pigeon.

Great way to spend a couple of hours. Loved the way they added more history by attaching notes from passengers to Homing Pigeons and setting them off to take them back to base for the passengers to collect.
