Long expanse of driftwood covered Iron sand backed by Marram grass covered sand dunes. A great area for kids to play in, although there is a play area not far from lifeguard pavilion. Also nearby is a campground

Plenty of parking. A walk on soft black sand amongst zillions of driftwood is necessary to reach the sea. It was very windy the day I went...and quite cool. Raincoat or warm jacket needed from now on!

This is a wild and rugged beach typical of many parts of the west coast of the North Island. People go surfing here but there are also days when it is quiet and calm. On a hot day however you need to remember to bring...More

It is really a spectacular black sand beach with a ridiculous dirt road to get there. Walk by a waterfall on the path to the beach. Just too cold to swim!

I used to live out at Castlecliff and spent many hours walking along the beach with the dog. It was great to go back for a visit. The weather was ghastly but it was still nice to go for a walk and watch the tourists...More
