This is a black sand beach so make sure that you wear your shoes on a hot summers day In the right conditions there can be some magnificent surf, though watch out for holes in the beach floor or for rips which can cause some...More

A wild beach, black sand, boulders and drift wood, virtually deserted when we arrived there - apart from two dubious-looking characters smoking and "hanging out". No sign of any coast guards. OK to walk the dog, or there may be some fishing, but there are...More

There are plenty of better beaches to visit. If there has been a lot of rain there will be debris from the river washed up on the beach. We found several dead animals which wasn’t pleasant. Dogs are only allowed there for part of the...More

Long expanse of driftwood covered Iron sand backed by Marram grass covered sand dunes. A great area for kids to play in, although there is a play area not far from lifeguard pavilion. Also nearby is a campground

Plenty of parking. A walk on soft black sand amongst zillions of driftwood is necessary to reach the sea. It was very windy the day I went...and quite cool. Raincoat or warm jacket needed from now on!

A short walk from where we stayed the beaches here have the black sand found along the west coast of New Zealand. The water here was quite wild when we visited with a lot of wood and other debris washed up. The beach stretched both...More

It is at Whanganui River mouth where plenty fresh water from the river meet and mixed with salty sea water, and you can see the colour difference between them. Nice place for swimming, although a lot drifted woods littered and scattered at this black sandy...More

This is a wild and rugged beach typical of many parts of the west coast of the North Island. People go surfing here but there are also days when it is quiet and calm. On a hot day however you need to remember to bring...More
