black sand beach
Jun 2021
day i visited was very dreary but good if it was a summers day and you want a swim. Very black sand so take shoes to walk if its hot. surf club right there. not far up the road to a fish and chip shop

Great for an exhilarating walk
Apr 2021
Visited the beach at the end of April, so not swimming weather. It is pretty rough here most of the time so I wouldn't recommend swimming unless there are guards on duty. Great beach for walking on and collecting driftwood. Spent an exhilarating hour being buffeted by the winds with our 5yr old grandson.

Decided to go and look at the Castlecliff beach. Not such a good beach day but it sure was close to the city

Average beach
Mar 2019
While perhaps not a highlight of the area, it's a pretty average beach that's worth a short drive out of town to investigate and possibly utilise.

Beach walk
Dec 2019 • Couples
Walked down here from the campground. As it was the evening the sand wasn't hot and the sun was just starting to set. Lots of driftwood on the beach, not many shells.

This can be a great surf beach
Nov 2018 • Couples
This is a black sand beach so make sure that you wear your shoes on a hot summers day In the right conditions there can be some magnificent surf, though watch out for holes in the beach floor or for rips which can cause some severe difficulties. There is a surf club building but one should check as to when volunteers are on duty.
One can choose to sun bake on the beach or go up on to the sand hills is so desired.

Not much there
Dec 2018 • Couples
A wild beach, black sand, boulders and drift wood, virtually deserted when we arrived there - apart from two dubious-looking characters smoking and "hanging out". No sign of any coast guards. OK to walk the dog, or there may be some fishing, but there are better beaches around.

It’s just a beach
Nov 2018 • Solo
There are plenty of better beaches to visit. If there has been a lot of rain there will be debris from the river washed up on the beach. We found several dead animals which wasn’t pleasant. Dogs are only allowed there for part of the year which is frustrating although I don’t know if anyone actually takes any notice of the signs.

Black Sand Beach
Jul 2018 • Family
Long expanse of driftwood covered Iron sand backed by Marram grass covered sand dunes. A great area for kids to play in, although there is a play area not far from lifeguard pavilion. Also nearby is a campground

Dogs loved it. Toilet facilities at the pavilion. Pleenty of parking. Black sand beach with plenty of pumas to collect.
