- Bron E5 contributionsA ceramic wonderlandAbsolutely incredible and inspirational. Even if ceramics isn’t your thing, this collection will blow you away. Rick Rudd met us at the door and was on hand with his exceptional knowledge of everything ceramic in NZ. Highly recommend you take the time.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 23 September 2023
- Simon VitaWellington, New Zealand11 contributionsSharing a love of ceramicsWhat a treat. You're greeted at the door by ceramic artist and collector Rick Rudd then it's up to you to immerse yourself in the lovingly curated collection of contemporary and classic ceramic works. As a bonus you may well even catch Rick with his hands in the clay, adding to a lifetime of work that began in the late 60sVisited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 24 September 2023
- Nan R1 contributionThis place is a treasure! What a wonderful, inspiring place! We drove there today from Wellington, and although it was a long drive, it was well worth it. Artist and collector Rick Rudd has created an amazing collection of work. New Zealand has a strong reputation among potters worldwide, and today's visit confirmed that it's well-deserved. Thanks, Rick, for being such a warm, knowledgeable host.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 23 December 2023
- ourletterbox22Palmerston North, New Zealand5 contributionsFantastic collection of meaningful pottery and inspiring art.Rick Rudd has gone above and beyond to not only display and sell a fine selection his own work, but to passionately track down, collect, exhibit and curate some New Zealands finest pottery and examples of work that has inspired him. We couldn't leave without purchasing the most amazing tea pot ever!!Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 2 January 2024
- Femke V10 contributionsHighly recommend a visitWe visited the Quartz Museum today and really enjoyed the extensive collection on display here. The museum houses exhibitions by different artists, their works dated between the 20th century to today. We really loved this 'ceramic timeline' and haven't experienced this anywhere else! Each artists corner felt personal and it was so nice to see a diverse range of artists with a bit of their story as well as their work. We met Rick Rudd who has a small working studio area here. It was lovely to have a chat and be able to ask questions. Highly recommend a visit.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 March 2024
- Scenic402433064568 contributionsA fabulous collection of national significanceA beautifully curated collection of the best studio pottery produced in New Zealand of the past 100 years. We thoroughly enjoyed wandering the two floors of salon rooms which showcase a large body of works from some of the best kiwi ceramic artists. These collections would not be out of place in any major museum retrospective. . Ricks own work is amazing and his passion evident everywhere. Thank you for sharing this with us so generously. You are a National treasure!Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 March 2024
- Gabriel T1 contributionOne of New Zealands greatest treasuresI rarely write reviews but I was so charmed by this very large little museum that today I will. For anyone who loves museums in general, the Quartz is a lesson in the power of what one committed person is capable of. For anyone who loves ceramics, the Quartz is a veritable candy store of artistic treasures. For anyone looking for a flood of creative inspiration, the Quartz will satisfy. I don't think there is anywhere else like this in the world. It's a rare and precious collection that should not be missed. Please do go out of your way to visit because you will be glad you did. I was fortunate to meet the founder while there. Rick was as delightful as his museum and a fantastic artist. You are doing important work Rick, keep it up.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 April 2024

Quartz gallery is a total must see and not just for lovers of ceramics. Rick Rudd has created a space that you could spend hours in wandering around and contemplating the works on show and learning about the lives of the artists. In addition to seeing Rick's works and perhaps purchasing one or two (the delightful Teapots series at present), Rick is a graceful and informative host who is happy to chat with you. What really caught my attention is the collection of Simon Manchester on show. This Wellington collector passed away last year and left his collection to Rick who has stunningly curated hundreds of pieces. The collection is a visual wonder. I totally encourage you to visit Quartz. Make this a must-do on your trip to Whanganui.

This is not just any museum. I thought it would be nice to spend 15 minutes in a museum while visiting Whanganui looking at ‘bits of pottery’. How wrong I was! The museum is a life’s work of Rick Rudd and the many other ceramic artists of NZ and those from overseas. This ‘museum’ is not showing a few coffee mugs or teapots but covers a vast spectrum of ceramic works, some of which are mind boggling to put in mildly. We spent a couple of hours at the Quartz and had quite a discussion with Rick who came across as someone who was not only enlightening but totally dedicated to his passion, all in a non-condescending manner.
I’ve kept the best to the last. Rick also has a studio in the museum where he produces some really magnificent pieces which are for sale. We bought two as my wife and I have slightly different tastes.

I just visited Quartz Museum today after being recommended by friends. I could have spent much longer soaking up the amazing collection of ceramics made by both international and New Zealand potters from past to present day. This place is a real credit to Rick Rudd, his knowledge and dedication to create a museum to showcase such works. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would thoroughly recommend a visit!👌

What a fabulous surprise....to find Rick's meticulously curated collection of NZ ceramics from potters throughout NZ. The collection tells a history of so many of our esteemed craftspeople spanning decades of potting. A great reminder of the depth of talent in our country. I suspect this collection is unequalled in NZ. Give plenty of time to take it all in, and if you're one of NZ's potters brace yourself for some positive reminiscing.
If you've ever worked with clay then be inspired with what's on display!

Welcomed by a master potter, a visit to this gallery provides a truly breathtaking experience of ceramic artistry and craftsmanship at its finest.
With the more recent addition of Simon Manchester's enormous collection to his own extensive collection, and a comprehensive representation of his own body of work, Rick Rudd has created and masterfully curated a world class exhibition of a generation of the most eminent New Zealand potters.
This must be easily the most impressive display of ceramic art accessible to the public, in the country. It showcases the medium's enormous diversity of form, colour and texture, and the imagination, creativity and craftsmanship of the artists. The individual pieces can be imposing, delicate, beautiful and sometimes quirky. They delight and inspire.
It is worth a visit to Whanganui just to see this wonderful collection. But even better, plan a multi-day visit so you can enjoy some of the many other attractions the city and surrounds have to offer.

We loved our visit at the museum. Rick Rudd the host was very helpful and friendly. He informed us about the ceramics and the displays were great. We loved the Len Lye and many of the ceramics were unusual and sculptural and so different.
One of the top places to visit in Whanganui.
Thank you Rick.

What a gem! Absolutely enjoyed our visit to the Quartz museum and talks with Rick - so much so that we returned the following morning to take in more. A very accessible overview of per-dominantly New Zealand studio ceramics unequaled as far as the number of pieces on display are concerned. Rick has thoughtfully grouped the pieces on unobtrusive but very effective shelves and plinths - a great eye for displaying each piece to its advantage. A must see for anyone interested in New Zealand studio ceramics and a great place to learn about the subject. Thanks Rick for creating this.

The Quartz Museum of Studio Ceramics is home to a superb and unique collection of New Zealand ceramics. Beautifully displayed, the works are housed in a centrally located building with readily available parking. On our all too infrequent visits to Whanganui we thoroughly enjoy visiting the museum, viewing new exhibitions and chatting with its founder Rick Rudd.
