About
Our skilled volunteers have refurbished two steam engines and we occasionally run our whole plant with one of these. For the past 60 years, we have developed our site into the main tourist attraction in Thames, almost entirely with voluntary labour. We take guided tours through C.19th century tunnels, demonstrate ancient gold processing machinery including a big stamper battery (rarely seen today) and visitors can pan for gold and keep any specks they find. Open school holidays in winter 10am-1pm every day and otherwise in winter 10-1 at weekends and public holidays. Summer open every day 10-4 til end of April except Christmas Day, Easter Friday and Anzac Day morning.

Great tour not to be missed
Very unexpected great tour! Tour guides were great, good value for money for an hour looking around the mines. 10 minute tour through the mine, then the machinery which was the best bit. Then you can look around the rest of the site. It’s a great rainy day activity.

    Great visit
Loved our visit to the gold mine, especially being able to go underground through a mine shaft tunnel, we found it really interesting being able to see how the miners worked back in the day. Fair price for everything you get to do ($20pp which includes an underground mine tour, gold panning, watching the machinery in action). Our tour guide Janet was friendly and extremely knowledgeable.

You have to like going down tunnels to like this place. Our experience was that it was run in a disorganised way. We didn't know where to wait and where to go to start with. It is interesting but there is also not very much of it.
the stamping machine is amazing.

A great experience. Being under ground hearing the stories of miners of old was stimulating. Working by candlelight and using a chisle is mindblowing. Staffed by volunteers who were knowledgeable and committed to giving us a great experience. Lots to see and do.

Goldmine Experience: run by volunteers, underground mine passage (unlit): [I wear a legbrace, have ungainly gait, walk challenges (stroke)], able to follow group, single--file in darkness, till the lit part of the tour. Deafening noise of stampers in action(!), gold-panning & more - what fun experience. Wear suitable shoes, can get pretty sludgy when it rains; check with tour guide if have difficulties with walking, or darkness. Fab, friendly tour & group, worthwhile stop.
