About
Nestled inside Victoria Esplanade, Palmy's iconic rose garden is a beautiful (and popular) spot for a garden wedding, or simply book it for your photos. Don't let yourself be limited by what you can use this space for though. In past years it's also been the scene of the city's Summer Shakespeare theatre productions.

If you love roses like I do you have to visit the gardens. The summer blooms are magnificent with all the old favorites as well as more modern varieties. Plenty of walk ways and places to simply sit and admire the beauty. If you are a plant lover - do visit these gardens.

We had a lovely hour or so here. A great selection of varieties and colours to consider for our own gardens.

Lovely colourful rose gardens - well maintained. I was disappointed however to see people with plastic bags helping themselves to cuttings / fresh flowers. There are books available to borrow near the bench seats so its a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours. You can then go to the nearby kiosk and have a delicious ice cream.

What a find in nz . Thousands of roses out in bloom . All in dedicated beds . I couldn't count the different colours on show . Even smaller beds which looked to be used for grafting even more different colours .
Shady trees , benches & even a bandstand for resting on to enjoy this vista of colour .

The flowers are beautiful! Nice way to spend a morning or afternoon. There are other things to do if you have more time - there are paths throughout the park, there is a playground, cafe, etc.

The Dugald MacKenzie rose gardens are very beautiful just now with peak flowering creating a great show. Tucked off the main road of the Victoria Esplanade it is a treasure that could be missed - definitely a must see particularly during November/December. A raised viewing platform by the pool gives a good overview. The rose garden hosts the N.Z.Rose Society rose trial grounds - it's always interesting to see how new roses perform before they are released on the market. Assessment of these roses takes place throughout the year with awards being made in early December. This is also a popular venue for weddings.

The Dugald MacKenzie rose garden is the jewel in the crown at the Palmerston North Victoria Esplanade. It is extensive with over 5000 rose bushes. The varieties are named. this is also a rose breeding trial ground and one of the largest rose gardens in the southern hemisphere. It was established in the 1960's when MacKenzie was Head of the Council Parks Dept. The rose garden is free to visit within park hours (dawn to dusk) and is part of the larger Esplanade, all of which is managed by the city council for the public. The rose garden has a lovely fountain in the centre and also an elegant band rotunda, which is very popular for outdoor weddings. Many many people of all ages and backgrounds go to smell and admire the roses, have picnics or take a quiet moment to contemplate nature. The garden never disappoints and the rose blooming season is long due to Palmerston Norths mild climate.

We will be passing through around 11th April this year. Is there much in flower at this time of year? How long approximately would it take to view the whole garden, not just the rose garden? Thanks for your help.
Written 18 January 2018
There will still be plenty of flowers and it’s a great place to linger and sit, but you can see it in about ten minutes.
Written 18 January 2018
Hi, which months of the year are best to visit to see the roses in all their glory?
Written 12 February 2017
The roses start flowering about November, depending on the season. They can carry on blooming until April or May even longer depending on the season. But the peak would be December through March. if the gardeners "dead head" the roses regularly we get a very long flowering season
