About
At the cultural heart of our city, Te Manawa draws art, science and heritage together to reflect our past, illuminate the present and inspire a creative and sustainable future for our growing region and its people. Our public want deeper and more energetic access to their museums. They want to see and hear their stories told, in their own voices. They are right to demand inclusion, representation and participation. These make for personal experiences that touch them emotionally, inspire them creatively and give life and mana to their collective heritage – making for an exciting place to live. The main goal of Te Manawa Museums Trust is to provide the people of Manawatū and beyond with interactive experiences in art, science and heritage. For us, it is all about connection. People should feel passionate and excited about, and attached to Te Manawa, the collections we care for, and the experiences we shape with them.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I think I should just keep adding smiley faces to my reviews as I am here at least twice a year with the grandkids (I live several hours away). Yet again the kids found plenty to look at and interact with. This is a place that is always on my ‘to do’ list.

We went to this museum/gallery to focus on Māori history, and to see the art exhibition. My time there was limited, so I did not visit the rest of the collection. The former was sparse, although there was interesting displays on the history of Palmerston Nth itself, but the exhibitions on in the gallery space was excellent. In particular I enjoyed the exhibition ‘Standing In My Own Light - E tū ana i tōku ake marama | 10 years of WAI – the Women’s Art Initiative’, which was very powerful. The staff member on duty in the gallery space was very helpful and informative, and the catalogue provided was a wonderful publication, which provided information beyond the current exhibition, also educating about violence against women. Well worth a visit.

Great museum with lots of interesting displays. Particularly good for families with your children with interactive area for under 8s, craft activities, water cycle etc.
Went there with friends with young children for the Santa’s Cave which is gold coin donation in the weeks before Christmas. Great display and Santa at end at set times of day so you can take a photo with Santa.

Visited with my 7 year old boy. We loved it, lots to see and fun interactive exhibits. He loved the old telephone box, and the tunnels. I loved the interactive flood display. Highly recommend with kids.

We are so so impressed with this museum. In my view better than Te Papa in that everything is labelled and explained clearly. A visitor here would leave completely understanding what they had seen. That is what a museum is for! This one has nailed it. It shows Maori history, European colonisation with personal stories of the Maori and pioneers, geology, ecology, water, insects, agriculture, industry and so on . Next door is an art gallery and upstairs a rugby museum but we didn’t have time for that today. I can highly recommend a visit. Please make plenty of time so you don’t go home disappointed
