My husband and I visited Westport I-Site yesterday to get some local knowledge on bird life & found the man on duty very keen to assist & answer our questions. (Unfortunately the weather wasn't in our favour).
Many leaflets & books on the area eg. Denniston Incline. Local coal made into reasonably-priced souviners.
Not sure why they were selling stuffed-toy alpacas though???
We plan to go through the Coaltown Museum there tomorrow before we leave. :-)

Our guidebook was less than enthusiastic about the west coast in general and Westport in particular, but we found it welcoming, we enjoyed visiting the museum, discovering the history of Westport, and also Cape Foulwind and the nearby seal colony. Negatives? Wi-fi was generally slow to very slow and places like motels (the Ascot Motor Lodge for example) don’t seem to realise that many visitors these days have mission-critical stuff to do while vacationing.

Thank you for all your positive comments about Westport. Sorry to hear your WiFi was slow. Westport township now has ultra fast free internet along the main street. If you ever come to Westport again please pop in and see us here at the I-site and we will advise you of all the activities, walks and great points of interest to visit.

The staff at the information centre were so friendly as were he rest of the people in Westport. It’s really nice vibe for tourists to come into with people being so welcoming and friendly. It not only credits the city but also the country. Well done Westport you are certainly tourist friendly and extremely helpful and accommodating. Thank you.

We dropped into the information centre to get some information about things to do in the area.
The lady behind the counter was so helpful giving us lots of ideas and giving us a brochure. She told us about the museum and the Denniston Mine. We decided to go for a drive up there the next day so she gave us the relevant information.
We hadn’t booked any accommodation and were thinking of staying at the Westport Motor Hotel. She made the booking for us giving us extra time to look at the museum and town and not having to worry about finding a place to stay.

The Intercity bus stops here so very convenient for those travelling on the bus. Staff friendly, great array on pamphlets etc. Like Greymouth for those without transport (like us) there is not much to do in the town. The centre however was not able to offer us any local tours, however we did hire a car ourselves. Centre quite amenable for us to leave our luggage there to await our bus trip (later in the day). Good service!

Thank you for your response on Trip Advisor, we really appreciate your comments. Regarding local tours, we have the Norwest Cave tours, Outwest Tours, which is an outdoor adventure tracking into the outback of Charleston, Wild River Rafting, which is 45 minutes north of Westport. I am guessing maybe because of the absence of a car, when you visited us, these tours may of been a problem to get to? In Winter they do require a minimum of 4 people to operate also. Hope this helps!! Once again, thanks for your response.

A really good Information Centre because not only I-Site but also a museum, Coal Museum. The service form the staff was good and informative related to the town and the locality of Westport. Plenty of informative brochures, souvenirs shop and booking place. On top of that, as the bonus, at the rear of the same building there is the COAL TOWN Museum, a really good museum tell us the history and anything of the town related to the coal. Location at the main street of Westport next to row of shops.
